ON THE BUS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2001 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is one of the first pieces I composed and arranged for big band and is based on the chord changes of Charlie Parker's Yardbird Suite.  I composed the tune in the late 1980's when, as a student, I was listening to a lot of Bird and Miles and spending a lot of time catching buses!   The original arrangement was done for the Queensland Youth Big Band and has been somewhat revised for this version.  The head features an Alto Sax 1/Trumpet 2 soli supported with some rhythmic and melodic stabs from the ensemble.  Space is provided in the chart for solos from Alto Sax1, Trumpet 2 and Piano.  The chorus beginning at measure 75 features a brass section unison soli passage, composed of some of my favourite Bird and Miles licks.  This provides a challenge for the brass players to keep this section tight and swinging.  Fully notated rhythm section parts have been included to assist less experienced players.  I hope you enjoy performing this chart!

This chart features alto, tenor, and bass solos throughout the chart as well as acapella sax and brass sections as well. Rooftop accents are meant to be kept fat and unclipped. It is important to keep musical momentum in acapella sections, as to keep the time with a lack of rhythm section. This is a fun one for the whole band! I hope you enjoy!

This exciting, upbeat bossa nova features a great melody set atop energizing stop-time rhythmic figures provided by the band. The Portuguese lyric is sung in unison by women, then joined by the men in prime unison. The flowing, harmonized bridge sets the bossa nova in motion, with beautiful voice leading typical of the style during the two-part passages.  Following a two bar drum solo, the stop-time melody changes to an English lyric. A modulatory interlude leads to a vocal scat solo with punchy vocal group background figures. The instrumental vamp returns, setting up a big conclusion! The arrangement, therefore, features piano and trombone throughout. It begins with a potion of Eric Doney's songs called “A Winter’s Tale.� It should be played freely. The pianist should feel free to ad lib, add his/her own style, and expand from the basic lead sheet given. This introduction leads into Chopin’s Nocturne Opus 9 No. 2 featuring lead trombone with rhythm section. Rick CHamberlain was a great ballad player and had terrific range. This arrangement pays respect to Rick’s range and goes up to a high D! At measure 49 the band takes over, particularly the lead trumpet. The sax section takes over at measure 65 with an up tempo sax soli, which can be joined by lead trombone. That is followed by a rubato piano in Eric’s style feature, and then up tempo solo sections for both trombone and piano. The ballad feel come back at measure 131 until the end. The ending is an Eric Doney ending. He often used this ending in his version of “Amazing Grace.�.
