This is a fairly early piece by Kate Loder. It dates from around 1845 and she would be 20 years old or less when composing it and it exists at least three months before the death of her grandmother, Bathsheba Richards; maybe with such sadness there is a connection. With this in mind, the words could truly mean so much more.
Note that both the words and music are by Kate Loder.

It’s in the key of a minor, a slow andante tempo and sad.

It’s quite simple, certainly for the singer.

This classic contemporary Christmas song was composed by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, and featured in the 1950 film The Lemon Drop Kid, before being recorded by Bing Crosby and Carol Richards later that year. This arrangement features a six bar introduction, and uses interesting chord inversions for strong harmonic movement, without altering the fundamental harmony of the composition. Irving Berlin ( 1888-1989) is the corner stone of the Great American Songbook. Composer and lyricist of over 1,500 songs that appeared in films, Broadway shows, musical revues and stand alone hits, he wrote such standards as Blue Skies, Puttin' On the Ritz, A Pretty Girl Is like a Melody, How Deep Is the ocean, Cheek to Cheek and the holiday favorites White Christmas, Easter Parade and God Bless America. Always (1925) was a wedding gift presented to Berlin's second wife, Ellin Mackay. (He was only married to his first wife, Dorothy Goetz, for six months before she died of typhoid Fever contracted on their honey moon.) This woodwind trio arrangement can be performed with 2 C Instruments (2 flutes or 2 Oboes or Flute and Oboe) and Bb Clarinet or Bassoon or Bb Bass Clarinet.
