Barely 20 years old, Brahms wrote this in 1853. It is the second of five movements. Being his last piano sonata, it is his biggest solo piano work.


This movement begins with a quotation from a poem by Otto Inkermann: Through evening's shade, the pale moon gleams While rapt in love's ecstatic dreams Two hearts are fondly beating.

This is the 10th Prelude of Volume 1 of Debussy’s Preludes for piano.

 

This piece depicts the rising of a submerged cathedral. It is derived from a Breton myth. The cathedral, according to legend, rises from the sea off the coast of the Island of Ys on clear mornings. After it’s entrance, the cathedral sinks back into the sea.

 

This is a striking example of what is considered musical impressionism – the allusion to an image.
