In the 18th century, Bach composed the Goldberg Variations (30 variations), in the 19th century Beethoven composed the Diabelli Variations (33 variations), in the 20th century Frederic Rzewski composed The People United Will Never Be Defeated (36 variations), and now, in the 21st century, Gary Noland has composed his monumental 39 Variations on an Original Theme in F Major. (There seems to be a pattern of three variations added on for each century). This is a work for adventurous first-rate pianists! The composition is in the form of 3 settings of the tune that flow together almost imperceptibly. The first and third settings feature the theme woven into various contrapuntal textures, while the second employs a type of cantus firmus technique, where the primary melody is played in double note values in the lower instruments below woodwind figuration derived from the secondary part of the tune. In addition to working with contrapuntal lines and octave-tuning practice, Fantasy on a Hebrew Chant also provides opportunities for teaching the three types of minor scales, exploring how elements of all three are used in the same musical composition. However, although Williams kept a Louisiana theme, the song is not a true cajun song, which helped the song gain widespread popularity:Ethnic music is usually unpalatable for a mass market unless it is diluted in some way (Harry Belafonte's calypsos, Paul Simon's Graceland… the list is endless). The broader audience related to 'Jambalaya' in a way that it could never relate to a true cajun two-step led by an asthmatic accordion and sung in patois.The Carpenters featured the song, in an up-tempo pop version with country flourishes, on their 1973 album Now & Then.
