They were looking for a piece they could use for a virtual choir. I'd had the Sing motive of a simple ascending Perfect Fourth in my head for a few days and decided to base the entire piece on it. The text was inspired by the 2020 pandemic situation. Choirs around the world were unable to sing together as they were accustomed due to social distancing needs as a way to slow the viral spread. The text is essentially a directive for everyone to find a way to sing in whatever way you can.

It is scored for three flutes and It has been written in C# Minor. Counterpoint builds texure by taking a number of melody lines and overlapping them. You will see I have composed three lines and moved the top and bottom lines in contrary motion as heard in such polyphony as Thomas Talice's Spem in Alium A mixture between the key signature, the orchestration and the various time signature jumps gives this piece it's folky feel. I started my composition in the triad of C# minor and us the melodies developed I ended up crossing between the chords of F# minor, D# and E minor these various chords help to keep the piece interesting.

The use of octave jumps is used to somewhat ground the piece in a tonality of B-flat in contrast to the more chromatic sounds of the octatonic scale. The title, Just In Time, refers to a couple aspects of the piece. Firstly, this was an assignment during my Graduate work in Composition and was finished just in time, only minutes before the deadline. Secondly, being a rhythmically complex piece, careful attention should be paid to playing the piece accurately and in time.

I researched types of harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic content that would typically bring to mind images of the sky. The piece had been floating around in mind for several years and that project was the perfect opportunity to bring it to life. The programmatic setting is meant to represent the sky in it's many forms from a calm, clear, sunny day, to a terrible thunderstorm raging at night. I'm dedicating this piece to the cats in my adult life since I met my wife, Becky. They each have a special place in my heart, and this piece is a tribute to them. The first movement describes the pain I felt when losing Cuddles and Chloe. The second movement describes the joy, love, and playfulness they all bring while on this Earth. The piece is also meant to be somewhat educational in nature and is a great tool for an intermediate player to learn expressiveness and somewhat more advanced techniques of music-making.
