This is the final song in Richard Simm's collection of Five Irish Tunes for two pianos. In 1724 some hot springs were discovered in the Irish town of Mallow, which soon became a famous health resort. The Rakes in the title of this well-known polka were a group of young lads who preferred drinking other things than the supposedly health-giving water there, and this catchy tune gives an inkling of the fun and games that seem to have been their main goal in life...

The first item in this suite of Icelandic tunes by Richard Simm is a hair-raising ghost story! These Icelandic melodies were originally arranged by Simm for beginner students to play as piano duets with their teachers or with advanced students. In their new form for two pianos, they are more embellished and technically challenging than the originals, but are short enough not to present too much of a hurdle. Four of the five songs are known to every Icelander, and their original texts often have stark, dramatic undertones.

George Butterworth was a uniquely gifted composer and arranger of English folk songs, who was tragically killed in action during WW1 at the age of only 31.
His small output included the song cycle, A Shropshire Lad, from which he expanded the first song, Loveliest of Trees into a wonderful orchestral rhapsody.
The music is full of passion, but also the most delicate sensitivity, capturing the romantic essence of the English countryside from bygone days.
This arrangement by Richard Simm for two pianos now gives pianists access to this beautiful music.

Richard Simm having some serious 2-piano fun with Widor's famous Toccata from his 5th Organ Symphony. The original is a technical marathon for the performer's right hand, although the footwork is relatively easy. So the idea here was to arrange this spectacular work in a new format for two pianos, and in such a way as to redistribute all those right-hand notes between two hands and generally give both performers a more comfortable time.

Smetana struggled hard for recognition in his life as a composer, but in his later years his major contribution to a Czech national style in music was acknowledged. Vltava is a marvellous orchestral depiction of the river that flows through Prague, reflecting the aspect of realism which was part of his romantic inspiration.

This 2-piano arrangement by Richard Simm is pianistically advanced in order to retain as much as possible of the original's rich orchestral texture, but the focus is on the beautiful main theme of the work, concluding with Smetana's rather Wagnerian coda. Polished pianists will enjoy taking part in the powerful, surging flow of this descriptive work.

This lovely song has become a folk tune in its own lifetime.  Composed in 1955 during the Soviet Russian Era, it achieved supreme worldwide popularity during the early 1960s, although the film for which it was originally composed has been forgotten.  Exotic, atmospheric harmonies, along with a truly memorable melodic line, transcend national boundaries and attest to the genuine musical gifts of composer Vasily Solovyev-Sedoi. Here it is in Richard Simm's arrangement for 2 pianos.

This innocent title belies another sad tale of Iceland's desperate and often tragic past, with battles against Nature at her most harsh, and the need to survive uppermost in everyone's thoughts. There are two well-known melodies to the lullaby, which was also used in a play about a kind of Icelandic Robin Hood, but the arranger found this one particularly beautiful.

This arrangement by Richard Simm for two pianos is based upon Rachmaninoff's orchestral version in E minor. The work was originally part of a set of 14 Romances for voice and piano, but its popularity has led to it being arranged for many combinations of instruments. The composer himself orchestrated the accompaniment both in its original key, with a singer as soloist, and in this higher key, scored for violin soloists. Its haunting beauty is best captured by playing softly, as if in the distance.
