The basic structure of each setting follows this pattern; A refrain is created from one of the verses in the Psalm. The refrain is sung first. Then the Cantor proceeds to chant the verses in traditional manner with the refrain inserted as the score indicates. With rehearsal time always a challenge, these Psalm Settings can be learned quickly, even with inexperienced singers, leaving more rehearsal time for preparing Offertory Anthems and other music. Its script is based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. The plot comes from the story written by Anna Leonowens, who became a school teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The musical opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on March 29, 1951, and starred Gertrude Lawrence as Anna, and a then mostly unknown Yul Brynner as the King. It ran for 1,246 performances and won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actress, Best Featured Actor, Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design. The musical was filmed in 1956 with Brynner re-creating his role opposite Deborah Kerr; the film won 5 Academy Awards. This piece is inspired by the following stanza from Paradise Lost: Whence and what art thou, execrable shape, That dar'st, though grim and terrible, advance Thy miscreated front athwart my way To yonder gates? Through them I mean to pass, That be assured, without leave asked of thee. Retire; or taste thy folly, and learn by proof, Hell-born, not to contend with spirits of Heaven. Here we see Lucifer, even after he has fallen so far, his wings bound by adamantine chains, still view himself with pride for being filled with the light of Heaven. He challenges Death, thinking himself superior to the foul (and more powerful) being. This piece explores the arrogance and emotions that I associate with the work as a whole, but particularly in Lucifer’s ego. The MP3 given here is just the render off of staffpad. Enjoy! Sherman) and featured in the 1964 motion picture Mary Poppins. The song speaks of an old beggar woman (the Bird Woman) who sits on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral, selling bags of breadcrumbs to passers-by for two pence a bag (equivalent to about 13p in 2022) so that they can feed the many pigeons which surround the old woman. The scene is reminiscent of the real-life seed vendors of Trafalgar Square who began selling birdseed to passers-by shortly after its public opening in 1844.
