After the world premiere in Dresden in 1845 had failed to be well received by the audience, Wagner revised large parts of the opera several times in the following decades. The most comprehensive changes were made for the Paris performance in March 1861, but even after that he made further revisions which superseded some of the previous changes and were performed in Vienna in 1875 among others. The study score is based on the version of 1875 which has misleadingly been published as the 'Paris version' until today and has actually to be referred to as 'Viennese version'. This SATB setting of Wagner's Pilgrim's Chorus from Tannhäuser features new lyrics by the arranger which are suitable for general worship as an anthem or call to worship with an attempt to follow the original as much as possible. The accompaniment respells many of the chords to simplify the reading and limit the double flats, C flats, and F flats of Wagner's work. Although very chromatic, the choral writing is not overly difficult and allows for frequent unison or part doubling.

In Ralph Sauer's fantastic arrangement of Excerpts from Act Two, we hear music from the following leitmotifs: Fate, Crisis, Death, the Ring and the Walküre. They are all ingeniously woven together by Wagner to create the magical canvas of the Ring Cycle. This arrangement of about 5 1/2 minutes in length is for 8-part Trombone Ensemble with optional Timpani and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Commissioned to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Adophe Sax’s birth, each of the movements of this piece (beyond the expository prelude) presents miniature vignettes of music written in Belgium’s past as seen through the lens of Sax’s invention. It is, in that sense, an homage to not only the great musical minds that came before Sax, but also to his own keen inventive mind and incomparable contributions to music history. The Postlude involves a curious intersection of Sax with another brilliant musical mind: Richard Wagner. Sax was the stage director for a performance of Wagner's Tannhauser, and he put some saxophones offstage with French horns because he couldn't find enough horn players in Paris. Wagner was so angry he rescored the Shepherd's Tune from Act 3 of Tristan und Isolde from saxophone to English horn. They tend to be short and not too demanding technically. Ralph Sauer has arranged Wagner's two Leaves for Euphonum and Piano in bass clef. Number 1 is a piano work from 1875 dedicated to Frau Betty Schott the wife of music publisher Franz Schott. Number 2, also a piano work, is an early opus from 1840 and is dedicated to the Paris based German painter Ernst Benedikt Kietz, a big fan of Wagner, who helped support the young composer during his lean years in Paris. Both leaves are lyrical, giving the performer a true taste of the master.

Along with Gustav Mahler, he represents the late flowering of German Romanticism, in which pioneering subtleties of orchestration are combined with an advanced harmonic style.Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose or The Rose-Bearer), Op. 59, is a comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It is loosely adapted from Louvet de Couvrai's novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas and Molière's comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac.In 1945 Strauss allowed an orchestral Rosenkavalier Suite to be published, but apparently was not involved in creating it.  It is likely that conductor Artur Rodzi?ski arranged it, as he conducted the suite's first performance, in October 1944 by the New York Philharmonic.The suite begins with the opera's orchestral prelude, depicting the Marschallin's and Octavian's night of passion (vividly portrayed by whooping horns and saxophones). Next comes the appearance of Octavian as the Rosenkavalier, depicted in tender music; the sight of him looking so young makes the Marschallin realise that he will soon leave her for a younger woman. There follows the duet between Octavian and Sophie – in which their love for each other becomes ever more obvious, but this is abruptly interrupted by the discordant music associated with Ochs's clumsy arrival. Next the violins tentatively introduce the first waltz, followed by another given out by the solo violin, before the whole orchestra settles into waltz mode. A general pause and a violin solo leads into the nostalgic music where the Marschallin sadly realises she has lost Octavian. Then comes its ecstatic climax. The work closes with a singularly robust waltz, depicting Ochs at his most pompous, and a boisterous coda newly composed for the suite.The PDF contains the Full Score and a full set of parts.
