Vodery and published as a piano piece in 1914, with a sub-title 'New One Step', and with a front cover description: New Society Dance - Originated by Billy Kent & Jeanette Warner - America's Classiest Dancers. It is possible that the title of the piece was intended to be just 'Carolina', with 'Fox Trot' being a descriptive subtitle. After her marriage, she retired from composition, and her compositions were unknown to her remaining family by the 1970s until reporters contacted them.The dedication in the original piano composition reads: Dedicated to the real Live Wire Maurice A. Richmond.The metaphorical use of 'live wire' likely emerged around the year 1900, and applied the words used in electrical circuitry to describe an energetic and unpredictable person.

J. Ricketts (1881 - 1945) a British Army bandmaster who later became the director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. Since service personnel were, at that time, not encouraged to have professional lives outside the armed forces, F. J. Ricketts published his compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth Alford. Supposedly, the tune was inspired by a British military officer who preferred to whistle a descending minor third rather than shout Fore! when playing golf. It is this descending interval that begins each line of the melody. English composer Malcolm Arnold added a counter-march, which he titled 'The River Kwai March' for the 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. On account of the movie the 'Colonel Bogey March' is often incorrectly credited as the 'River Kwai March'.

Several years ago, I lost my father suddenly.  One of the things that helped me through the grieving proess was music.  The music of Kings of the Past and He Lives in You from Disney's The Lion King resonated in me during this time and, being a musician, I started searching for an arrangement of this for symphonic wind ensemble.  Much to my disappointment, I could not find such an arrangement.  So, I sat down and wrote this out, developing the emotional tones I felt during the process, traveling from grief and despair to eventually hope and celebraton of who my father was and that he continues to abide in me in spirit, and developing the difficuty level I thought would be welcome in the type of ensemble I like to play in.  I would recommend this score and parts to a community band or a skilled high school band, as ther are several chances to highlight the different sections of the band with multiple solos that will challenge the range on the instrumentalists.
