It explores various facets of the instrument (as in the more complex nature of Pierrot's Commedia Dell'Arte character). The piece features a serial 'note-row' procedure but in a relaxed manner, more akin to Berg than either Schoenberg or Webern. The second piece, Folk Lament, alludes to a folk idiom by using modality (characterised by the flattened seventh degree of the scale) within a sonata form structure. The two main themes give a broad feel of being improvised and, particularly in the case of the second subject, includes composed-out forms of folk-like ornamentation. The final piece, The Clown, employs bluesy inflections, an irregular time signature (5/4) and a clear rondo structure. Varied repetitions of the main, jaunty theme, alternate with contrasting episodes in related keys, one of which is even a derivation of the 12-bar Blues. The set is highly accessible and suitable for more advanced bassoonists including students and professionals. As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment II initially builds up the notes of a major chord with added augmented fourth, in a brief introduction. The main section of the piece features the simple device of alternating added note harmonies, rocking back and forth like a pendulum. These include an upper pedal on the note A in each chord, landing on A minor around the mid-point. Meanwhile, a slightly unsettling off-beat lower pedal ostinato rings on throughout. Towards the end, the opening chords are alluded to, before settling on reiteration of a resolution on A major. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. It was specifically composed in memory of the composer's father, but the work can be used to the reflect any loss, or similar sentiment. The point of departure is the pounding repeated tones (the note D, for Death) at the start of the Lacrymosa of Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem; a work which mourned the death of both its composer's parents. Throughout my In Memoriam, the repeated pedal note D is literally ever-present and obsessive, like the looming of death itself, and the percussion take a somewhat military role. The main melodic idea is a twelve-note theme stated at the beginning, though the music is not strictly serial. This theme undergoes various transformations and orchestrations, depicting the many facets of a character who essentially remains themself. More optimistic interludes feature woodwind solos, but the note D always remains. A passage of stark two-part counterpoint is followed by the disintegration of the main theme before a varied return of previous material. Then follows the inevitable dominance of the note D, in crescendo, before the work abruptly ends, frozen still. The work is highly accessible for both performers and audience. The first piece has a slow introductory feel, with a rising added-note chord sequence alongside a descending bass line, in crescendo. The second piece is based on a 7-bar ground bass (rising a minor third each time), that features considerable textural variation on each cycle, and culminates in a 3-part canon. The third piece explores the whole range of the piano in varied statements of a 10-bar semiquaver toccata theme, featuring canons and a superimposed scotch-snap theme. The fourth piece is cumulative, in four sections, and gradually descends in pitch by alternating hands in a minimalist build up of motifs, each followed by a chordal refrain. The fifth piece gradually builds up a right hand melody over various syncopated harmonies and appoggiaturas, before inverting the role of the hands. The sixth piece is a simple cycle of ascending repetitions of a 10-bar added-note chord sequence, with octave bass line, that rise by a perfect fifth each time. The seventh piece is a varied repetition of the opening movement (thus framing the cycle), with the initial chord sequence now arpeggiated, and with a fuller texture. The cycle is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. The title of the piece reflects its inspiration: the Lantern Tower of Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (1966-67). The tower's sixteen sides contain panels of stained glass, designed by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens. Their effect is to bathe the cathedral in radiant colour, with three plain panels projecting shafts of brilliant white light through the multi-coloured spectrum. The Lantern Tower (Chorales II) aims to illustrate the intermingling light patterns in a series of chorale-like variations, which, like the tower itself, eventually comes full circle.
