The Quartet was composed during the virus lockdown between the 18th March & the 2nd April 2020 and is in five movements. All of the movements reflect the sense of confinement, frustration & longing to go out & return to nature. The final movement is a simple set of variations on the hymn tune known as 'Saltash' or 'Pleading Saviour', the tune appears in the American 'Plymouth Collection' of 1855. The tune forms one of my earliest musical memories and appears fully in quotation marks towards the end of the work played by the viola. Paddy Roberts was a South African musician who flew in the RAF during the Second World War, then later as a commercial airline pilot. His music career finally got off the ground in the mid ‘50s. Ralph Butler was a well-known comedy lyricist of the time, responsible also for The Sun Has Got His Hat On, Nellie The Elephant and Run Rabbit, Run among others.
