The series of irregular isolated phrases in the principal outer sections were actually created by setting some of the text from the aforementioned poem, as the work was originally conceived as a vocal setting. The contrasting second section (later briefly alluded to before the final passage) is faster, in 7/8 metre, and is a series of permutations on a melody created by setting initial lines from Dylan Thomas's 'In My Craft or Sullen Art'. A central section features some military-like fanfare motifs and material from a projected setting of the Gloria. As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment I uses a simple minor key chorale that features a descending bass line. This poignant chord sequence was later used and developed in the composer's 2020 anthem God So Loved the World (also available via Sheet Music Plus). In Fragment I this idea is repeated with textural variation, ascending in pitch, before a dramatic silence. The piece concludes with a further statement of the sequence, now finally with an added melody. Over these chords, a melody gradually unfolds and is developed and decorated (also appearing in canon at one point in the pedals!). This musical material originates from the same composer's early original setting of the carol Away in a Manger (also available via Sheet Music Plus), which uses the aforementioned harmonies to depict the rocking motion of Christ's crib. Therefore, this organ work is a 'meditation' on this, almost in the manner of a chorale prelude. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice.
