Howard (A0.1471113). Mirage Sextet is a single movement work, and is scored for a mixed chamber ensemble of clarinet (in A), bassoon, piano, violin, viola and cello. The work focuses on an exploration of the octatonic scale on C, in the semitone-tone variant. The piece has a loose ternary feel, as the outer sections present primary material and main themes that recur. Meanwhile, a middle section offers some contrast in a succession of mini cadenza-style solos for most of the instruments. The work develops 20th century folk-influenced idioms, such as those of Bartok, Kodaly, early Lutoslawski and Ligeti, as well as Stravinsky, Shostakovich and perhaps even Messiaen. The main compositional interests are: changing, as well as irregular, time signatures; the aforementioned octatonic scale to create folk-like motifs and melodies, added-note harmonies (with the importance of the augmented fourth interval); and percussive doublings of instruments in their lower (gritty/folky) registers, in octaves, as well as liberal actual doubling by the piano. It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. The vocal line, for any solo voice or for unison voices, retains the folk tune contour throughout, within the range of low D to high D. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice. The contrasting second section (later briefly alluded to before the final passage) is faster, in 7/8 metre, and is a series of permutations on a melody created by setting initial lines from Dylan Thomas's 'In My Craft or Sullen Art'. A central section features some military-like fanfare motifs and material from a projected setting of the Gloria. Therefore, this organ work is a 'meditation' on this, almost in the manner of a chorale prelude.
