Published by Padgett Music Llc (A0.1140562). This two-part invention was composed by Robert W. Padgett in 1990 as a private exercise in invertible counterpoint. The upper voice announces the motive in the tonic key of A minor that quickly overlaps itself at the octave as a brief stretto. An episode consisting of a modulation sequence arrives at a half cadence in bar 4 in E major. The motive is then inverted in bar 5 by the upper voice followed by a partial restatement of the original motive by the lower voice in bar 6. This interplay between the motive’s inversion and its original form continues through bar 10 before a new episode modulates sequentially to a cadence in bar 13 with a statement by the lower voice of the original motive in the relative key of C major. An inversion of the original episodic sequence from bar 2 follows with slight alterations that cycle through a series of contrasting keys. A second interplay begins in bar 17 between the motive’s inversion in the lower voice followed by its partial restatement in the upper voice. The exchange of motive and countermotive by the upper and lower voices is an example of invertible counterpoint. In bar 27, an extended version of the motive begins in F minor before morphing back into A minor with the same modulation formula from bar 2 that redirects to a perfect cadence in the tonic key with a final Picardi third in A major.

This setting of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem, The Wind, from A Child's Garden of Verses, is composed for two-part SA treble chorus with piano accompaniment. The extended tonal harmonies ask students to hear and resolve suspended and non-chord pitches within easily accessible thirds and sixths, while Part I can help develop range for the higher voices.  In terms of text, Stevenson’s poem provides mature lyrics for young musicians as well as an opportunity for cross-discipline literary learning.  A current and respected choral director who reviewed the piece referred to the piano accompaniment as fun to play and varied nicely.  In response to the piece as a whole, she also said, I do think the young choral world can use more challenging pieces..

The main work to be featured was Robert Schumann's Papillons, and the composer was inspired by this piece to write a prelude for that piece. The work is roughly 2-4 minutes, long, and features material from Schumann's piece reimagined into a broad acoustic space. The work is designed to lead in attacca to the Schumann piano work, and although it can be performed separately on its own the composer strongly encouraged the direct connection to be made, without pause.

A good example of this is 'L'il Darlin' by Basie/Hefti, lots of bands have trouble with the 2 staccato crotchets in the main tune, placing them just so is tricky! Now, this is certainly not jazz, but the principle is the same. Dr.B.R.Papperitz was professor of harmony at the Leipzig Conservetoire from 1851-1868 and was a major influence on the composers of his time, other than that I know very little!

Recorded by Nicolas Horvath for Grand Piano records (GP822)Together with other manuscript sketches from Debussy’s last productive summer of 1915, the Hotel Drouot sale in Paris, on 7 December 2004 included the start of an unknown piano piece. The 18-bar outline suggested a Petite Valse (‘Little Waltz’) in the accessible style of Debussy’s La Plus que lente of 1910, to which astute pianists will recognise passing allusions both during and at the end of my completion. The waltz is simply meant to be enjoyed by pianists seeking what might be termed a novelty by a great composer, as well as by its audience.

Shield's Trios, written for a continental audience, are seminal works in the composer's output and mark a new level of compositional attainment in the English chamber music repertory. Technically, they contain a wide variety of ideas which are developed with great ingenuity through a wide range of keys, dynamic contrasts and timbral effects. Aesthetically, they blend 'popular' and 'learned' taste along with 'orchestral' splendour and 18th century notions of beauty. The Trios present a dazzling range of moods and style with each work demonstrating Shield's mastery of the idiom, both in his treatment of individual instruments and in the handling of textures. While there is no shortage of melody and accompaniment, in which the violin takes the lead, there are many memorable solos for the viola and the cello in its high register. The wide range of textures includes melodic decoration, dialogue, contrast of high and low register, legato and staccato, powerful unison and double octaves. Shield's ability to incorporate arioso-like melody, the prevailing 'symphonic' style and folk elements was largely achieved through the cross-generic requirements of English comic opera (a form to which Shield devoted himself during the whole of his creative career). In general, Shield's technique results in a firm control of the way music moves - with sometimes a surprising degree of stylistic restlessness and sometimes of unexpected plainness and simplicity. The trios Shield selected for publication were issued by Longman and Broderip, London, in January 1796 under the inspection of the composer. No autograph of these works survives and Longman and Broderip's printing, a copy of which is preserved in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, under the call number Mus.Instr.I 214(15), is the only source of this edition. The title page, with its dedicatory inscription, reads: Six / TRIOS / FOR / Violin, Tenor and Violoncello, / Composed / And Inscribed to the Memory of / Jacob More Esqr. / By / Wm. SHIELD./ (Musician in Ordinary to His Majesty) / Entd. At Statn. As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with fairy tales: with their archetypal characters and set phrases like ‘Once upon a time …’ and ‘… they all lived happily ever after’. Fairy tales were however also a source of unrest for me as a seismograph of mankind’s underlying primal fears and desires. So as a performer and composer I have always felt that Robert Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen [Fairy Tales] (scored for the same instrumentation as my own composition) was a disjointed, complex contemporary work – despite the innocence and naivety of its initial appearance. I therefore do not intend my own Es war einmal … [Once upon a time …] to be a mere sentimental, nostalgic flight into the distant past, but as a naive and fantastical alternative concept to our genuine world with all its upheavals.
