This piece is an original arrangement based on the wistful English folk melody 'Barbara Allen'. It takes the form of a 7-verse carol, with introduction and coda. The piano weaves a set of characterful textural variations on the folk tune, with each verse being linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players.
