Robert Cunningham's Sonnet XVIII is a setting of William Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 (Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?) for baritone voice, piano, and alto recorder. Â The central idea of Shakespeare's poem is that the otherwise ephemeral beauty of its human subject is immortalized through the artistic medium of the sonnet. Â This setting takes that idea to the next level by memorializing this sonnet, along with the whole era in which it was penned, through the artistic medium of music. Â Composed in 1982 and revised in 2019, this work is intensely Romantic, but also has an antique flavor encapsulating the music of Shakespeare's time. Â The full score and individual parts for the baritone voice and the alto recorder are included. Â Total duration: Â 5:40.Â
