The deeply moving vocal work I Have a Star originated in a poem written by the composer one dark night in the early 1980s during a time of great spiritual crisis. He set it to music only years later, originally for soprano solo, chorus, and piano. As in the other two concertos for bass, the harp plays a significant roll throughout the work providing a harmonic backdrop on which the basses play. Conceived as a conversation between the two soloists, their parts interweave, calling and answering each other. The orchestra is interwoven with the basses to add contrast and color. The Double Concerto in B Minor should be interesting to both performer and audience. This is a piano reduction.

The volume presented here takes up this tradition: it contains 5 pieces (plus critical commentary) - previously unpublished - taken from an album which Fanny Hensel had compiled for her brother, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and which she had copied by a writer. The Bourrée in E Minor, from the Lute Suite in E minor, has suggested phrasing, fingerings, and bowings are for double bass.  The Aire on the G String is from the 3rd Orchestral Suite.  This does not have any edits beyond phrasing.  The student is encouraged to develop his/her own fingerings and bowings and discuss his/her reasons with the instructor.  The duration of the Aire is approximately 2:50 and the Bourrée is about 1:30. The student and the teacher should play both parts, perhaps, changing on the repeats.
