The work centres around E minor, and states the main motif at the outset (E, G, F#). This is then extended and transformed throughout the course of the piece. An initial introductory motivic passage is followed by a scalic section that features another core concept of the work; that of the octatonic scale (alternating semitones and tones, or vice versa). Then comes the main extended scherzo-like section, itself in a ternary structure, that exploits permutations of the opening motif and the octatonic scale, across the entire range of the cello. The work builds towards a climax, including in extreme high pitch and loud dynamics. After a silence, there follows a very quiet and mysterious muted coda, which briefly recounts the main motivic ideas of the piece, before ending on the only pizzicato note of the work. The piece builds in textural complexity and density throughout, as an attempt to depict the increasing sense of abundant love, referred to in the text. The main melodic material is deliberately simple and rather folk/chant-like. This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a four-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution on an F major chord at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SATB choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. Over these chords, a melody gradually unfolds and is developed and decorated (also appearing in canon at one point in the pedals!). This musical material originates from the same composer's early original setting of the carol Away in a Manger (also available via Sheet Music Plus), which uses the aforementioned harmonies to depict the rocking motion of Christ's crib. Therefore, this organ work is a 'meditation' on this, almost in the manner of a chorale prelude.
