As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment IV is a modern-day two-part invention. The piece explores various permutations of the opening four bar subject, passed between the hands throughout. Meanwhile, a second part is created by using the initial idea in canon, or by introducing a secondary scalic subject. The work is in a ternary structure, with the opening section returning in a shortened form, and with parts swapped over, as the final part. Meanwhile, the middle section explores the initial subject in augmentation, with a varied secondary part. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. 'Invocation and Dance' begins with an introductory summons call from the bassoon (with piano chords), outlining the irregular metre feature of the whole work. Then follows the main dance section, in ternary form. Its main A section material centres around C (which returns with variation towards the end), and consists of a jaunty 7/8 bassoon theme, accompanied by unsettled piano harmonies. The contrasting central B section, in the dominant key, continues to explore irregular metre with 'hiccups' in the rhythm, as piano 'oom cha' chords support a bassoon melody based mainly on fourths. The opening invocation call recurs in slight variation at the end to bring the work full circle. It consists of multiple iron casts of the artist's body, in various poses. These are randomly distributed around the gallery space. This flexibly scored piece is a musical reflection of this artwork, in 6 sections (labelled A-F), for any mixed ensemble, with an untuned percussion part (F). Rhythms and pitch material remain similar throughout. However, following an initial solo statement (A), the texture is continually varied within the context of multiple free canons (B-E). The work centres around E minor, and states the main motif at the outset (E, G, F#). This is then extended and transformed throughout the course of the piece. An initial introductory motivic passage is followed by a scalic section that features another core concept of the work; that of the octatonic scale (alternating semitones and tones, or vice versa). Then comes the main extended scherzo-like section, itself in a ternary structure, that exploits permutations of the opening motif and the octatonic scale, across the entire range of the cello. The work builds towards a climax, including in extreme high pitch and loud dynamics. After a silence, there follows a very quiet and mysterious muted coda, which briefly recounts the main motivic ideas of the piece, before ending on the only pizzicato note of the work. This work aims to depict a common theme of certain pieces by some classical composers: that of deathly or devilish dances, and the like. This piece is an extended single movement structure for a mixed chamber ensemble that is an octet of oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon, piano, viola, cello, and double bass. The form is divided into a series of contrasting dances (labelled as Dance, Folk Lament, Jig, Meditation, and Funeral March), all of which are interspersed with differing statements of an ostinato-based 'chorale' idea on the piano. The whole work is framed by an 'intrada', which builds the germinal motif on which the whole piece is based, characterised by semitones and fourths. Indeed, the 'devil's interval' of the augmented fourth has a particular function and significance. The piece actually ends with an 'epilogue', which features mysterious and ghostly reminiscences of the previous main sections. The title of this work also refers to the episode 'Dance of the Dead' from the 1960s cult TV series 'The Prisoner'. In part, the piece attempts to capture the mystery and atmosphere of the series, and of that specific episode. Indeed, the music's series of related but contrasting sections act almost as an original sequence of dramatic TV incidental music cues. The work is accessible to both performers and audience alike. Several key ideas, motifs and chords recur, and are juxtaposed in a mosaic-like manner. The piece focuses on harmonies with added augmented fourths, reminiscent of Messiaen, in an attempt to express joy or even ecstasy. The influence of Berio (Folksongs) can be seen in the doubling, colouring, and sustaining of the vocal line by the piano, creating an 'accidental' form of harmony, as well as supporting the singer. The piece is appropriate for most standards of singer and pianist. This musical material originates from the same composer's early original setting of the carol Away in a Manger (also available via Sheet Music Plus), which uses the aforementioned harmonies to depict the rocking motion of Christ's crib. Therefore, this organ work is a 'meditation' on this, almost in the manner of a chorale prelude.
