The initial sequence is purely harmonic, while the second cycle adds a simple bass line outlining cadences. The third appearance transforms the aforementioned bass line into a more scalic pattern. Following a sudden silence, the fourth cycle is curtailed and adds a simple melodic line in the treble part, before a final resolution. Several key ideas, motifs and chords recur, and are juxtaposed in a mosaic-like manner. The piece focuses on harmonies with added augmented fourths, reminiscent of Messiaen, in an attempt to express joy or even ecstasy. The influence of Berio (Folksongs) can be seen in the doubling, colouring, and sustaining of the vocal line by the piano, creating an 'accidental' form of harmony, as well as supporting the singer. The work centres around E minor, and states the main motif at the outset (E, G, F#). This is then extended and transformed throughout the course of the piece. An initial introductory motivic passage is followed by a scalic section that features another core concept of the work; that of the octatonic scale (alternating semitones and tones, or vice versa). Then comes the main extended scherzo-like section, itself in a ternary structure, that exploits permutations of the opening motif and the octatonic scale, across the entire range of the cello. The work builds towards a climax, including in extreme high pitch and loud dynamics. After a silence, there follows a very quiet and mysterious muted coda, which briefly recounts the main motivic ideas of the piece, before ending on the only pizzicato note of the work. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom.
