But when he came to making a complete draft of the music, he seems to have lost interest during Roderick Usher’s long monologue, even though he was setting his own text. As in No-ja-li he jumped to the next passage that interested him, in this case the exciting final melodrama and the collapse of the Usher house itself.In the process of completing the missing half of the score, I discovered that by reusing Debussy’s material for similar psychological situations across the opera, and by metamorphosing existing ideas (as Debussy does with Mélisande’s theme in his opera Pelléas et Mélisande), the only things I really needed to add were linking material and any passages where fast music was required. So the ‘nightmare scherzo’, and Lady Madeline’s escape from her coffin and her final bloody revenge on her brother are all mine, but most of the rest is existing Debussy in changing contexts (in which the Russian technique of ‘changing backgrounds’, both harmonic and textural, proved extremely useful, as it did to Debussy in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). Eventually, both my completed ballet No-ja-li and the House of Usher were successfully premiered in 2006 and the latter soon began to find its way into the established repertoire in Europe and the US. To further support this, I transcribed some of the highlights of Debussy’s score as A Night in the House of Usher for organ, and subsequently piano—with a focus on Scene 2 and the final, horrific and maca-bre melodrama. This climaxes in the double deaths of Roderick Usher and his Sister Madeline, together with the disintegration of the ill-fated House of Usher into the stagnant lake-all beneath a blood-red moon.In this form it was first performed by Ian Buckle in the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds in 2010.

The contrasting central B section, in the dominant key, continues to explore irregular metre with 'hiccups' in the rhythm, as piano 'oom cha' chords support a bassoon melody based mainly on fourths. The opening invocation call recurs in slight variation at the end to bring the work full circle. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. Rhythms and pitch material remain similar throughout. However, following an initial solo statement (A), the texture is continually varied within the context of multiple free canons (B-E). The first piece has a slow introductory feel, with a rising added-note chord sequence alongside a descending bass line, in crescendo. The second piece is based on a 7-bar ground bass (rising a minor third each time), that features considerable textural variation on each cycle, and culminates in a 3-part canon. The third piece explores the whole range of the piano in varied statements of a 10-bar semiquaver toccata theme, featuring canons and a superimposed scotch-snap theme. The fourth piece is cumulative, in four sections, and gradually descends in pitch by alternating hands in a minimalist build up of motifs, each followed by a chordal refrain. The fifth piece gradually builds up a right hand melody over various syncopated harmonies and appoggiaturas, before inverting the role of the hands. The sixth piece is a simple cycle of ascending repetitions of a 10-bar added-note chord sequence, with octave bass line, that rise by a perfect fifth each time. The seventh piece is a varied repetition of the opening movement (thus framing the cycle), with the initial chord sequence now arpeggiated, and with a fuller texture. The cycle is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Several key ideas, motifs and chords recur, and are juxtaposed in a mosaic-like manner. The piece focuses on harmonies with added augmented fourths, reminiscent of Messiaen, in an attempt to express joy or even ecstasy. The influence of Berio (Folksongs) can be seen in the doubling, colouring, and sustaining of the vocal line by the piano, creating an 'accidental' form of harmony, as well as supporting the singer. The piece is appropriate for most standards of singer and pianist.
