Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.787360

Composed by Greg Bartholomew. Concert,Contemporary,Folk. Octavo. 12 pages. Burke & Bagley #4641623. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787360).

A setting for unaccompanied mixed choir (SATB) of the poem FIRE AND ICE by Robert Frost (1874 - 1963).  Duration ca. 3'15.

Published in December 1920 in Harper's Magazine and again in 1923 in his Pulitzer Prizeāˆ’winning book New Hampshire, Fire and Ice is one of Robert Frost's most popular poems.  Some have asserted that the poem is a compression of Dante's Inferno. In an anecdote he recounted in 1960, prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claimed to have inspired Fire and Ice in an encounter with Frost a year before the poem was published. Frost asked Shapley how the world will end, and Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space.

Composed by Apostolos Paraskevas. 20th Century,Contemporary,Romantic Period,World. Score and parts. 11 pages. Silver Sickle Publications #6104711. Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.942097).

This guitar and vocal work were originally set on the Robert Frost poem ā€˜Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Eveningā€™, and was written for a lecture series at Boston University given by Lukas Foss entitled ā€˜Words on Music. Some years later I set out to publish the work and found that the estate of the late R. Frost frowned upon this particular practice and after a second failed attempt to get permission to publish the work, I decided to write my own verse for this composition (my first actually) and use a subject familiar to me, the story of Daedalus and Icarus Journey to freedom.

After his arrival in Crete, Daedalus found that Minos would not let him leave. He subsequently obtained wax and feathers and fashioned wings for himself and his son Icarus. With these they succeeded in flying away, but Icarus, flying too near to the sun, melted his wings, fell into the sea near Crete, and drowned; Daedalus escaped to Italy only to fall into the hands of the local King Kokalos who drowned him in hot water.

 The Daedalus and Icarus Journey

Escape from here is what Iā€™ll do

I have a plan I thought it through

The waves beneath us deadly wild

Iā€™ll fly up high, itā€™s just the sky

That was a dreadful thing to say

To fly so high, you canā€™t survive.

Your wings, your soul and frozen smile,

The sun will burn and you will die.

The Death you seek I am sure youā€™ll get,

Heā€™s there for you he wonā€™t forget.

He will be fast and kind with you,

If He survived why not you too?

Itā€™s time to go the sky gets blue

My mind will be so close to you

You cannot scare me I have to try,

The time is right, letā€™s say goodbye.

SKU: A0.1303857

Composed by Geoffrey Peterson. 21st Century,A Cappella,Classical,Contemporary. 7 pages. Geoffrey Peterson #893380. Published by Geoffrey Peterson (A0.1303857).

Robert Frost wrote ā€œStopping by Woods on a Snowy Eveningā€ in 1922. Frost referred to the poem as his ā€œbest bid for remembrance.ā€ It was published, along with other celebrated poems, including ā€œFire and Iceā€ and ā€œNothing Gold Can Stay,ā€ in his collection ā€œNew Hampshireā€ in 1923.Ā

I intended the slow repeating tone cluster chords in the last section as a solemn meditation on death. I wanted to be as deliberate as possible with the poemā€™s two concluding quintessential lines ā€œAnd miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.ā€Ā

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other soundā€™s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
