After singing the excellent Britten setting of this traditional song I was moved to write various versions of my own: The choral versions are more sophisticated than the original but different from and possibly rather easier than the Britten arrangement. The voice and guitar version has a more interesting guitar part than the traditional guitar chords. The sound samples are sung by Matthew Curtis of choraltracks.com for the choral versions and by Margaret Jackson-Roberts with the composer on guitar for the voice and guitar version. Elgar composed Salut d'Amour, Op. 12 in 1888 while he was romantically involved with Caroline Alice Roberts (the work is dedicated to her). It's original title was Liebesgruss (Love's Greeting). It wasn't until the present title was used at the suggestion of his publisher that the work took off in popularity. It is one of Elgar's best-known works and has inspired numerous arrangements for widely varying instrumental combinations. Andrew Poirier's lovely arrangement for trombone quartet of advanced performers will make a beautiful addition to your recital.

It's a Sin to Tell a Lie is a 1936 popular song written by Billy Mayhew, introduced early that year on records by many dance bands including Dick Robertson on the 78rpm record Champion 40106, and later popularized by Fats Waller on Victor Records.  It was recorded in French by Cajun singer Cléoma Breaux in 1936 or 1937. Four further recordings of the song were made in 1936, namely by Freddy Ellis and His Orchestra (April), Victor Young and His Orchestra (April), Elton Britt (September), Roy Smeck and His Serenaders and Vera Lynn. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills that we hope you like!
