Maurice Ravel wrote his string quartet in 1903 and it is now considered to be a standard in the repertoire. Its second movement features a fun little scherzo followed by a slow, lyrical, wayward song. The scherzo returns completing the form. In this arrangement, Iâ€™ve used changing orchestration reminiscent of Ravelâ€™s scoring (and also a little bit of his contemporary, Debussy).

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker debuted in 1892. One of the best-known scenes from the work is Pas de Deux which comes near the end of the ballet. This version for brass quintet places muted trumpets, horn, and trombone in the role of the plucked strings and harps, while the tuba plays the melody followed by an unmuted trombone. Players should experiment with both straight mutes and cup mutes. Some other notes on this arrangement:

Monteverdi's Monumental Vespro della Beata Vergine is often considered to be one of the most important works of the Renaissance era with its grand 14 movement structure. Interestingly, this 1610 piece does not specify instrumentation, so ensembles can form their own sound by controlling orchestration. For this reason, I found it fitting to write an arrangement of the Versicle & Response for 9 horns. A great opener for any large horn choir concert.

George Gershwin combines elements of classical and jazz in his 1924 work, Rhapsody in Blue. This arrangement for 7 horns and tuba (or 8 horns) uses straight mutes, stop mutes, and a harmon mutes to create colorful textures. It is important that hornists play out when using mutes to balance with unmuted horns. Some other notes about this arrangement:

-Horn 1 calls for a harmon mute. A bass trombone harmon mute is reccomended but a stop mute can be used in its place.

-An optional 8th horn part is provided. It should be played if no tuba is present.
