The image of a rock, its density, its hardness, its inability to be shaken, actually, that is a universal metaphor. And so we find it often in the Bible.   Moses struck the rock to produce water. Paul tells us that rock was Christ. [Ex 17, 1 Cor 10] Moses was hidden in the cleft of a rock to watch the presence and glory of God pass by. [Ex 33] David often alluded to the rock as a fortress in the Psalms. [Ps 18] And the picture of Christ as the cornerstone is another favorite theme.
