Additionally, it is known as “Song of the Cribâ€. The melody of the Verse without the Refrain, is known as “Christ Was Born on Christmas Dayâ€. Brahms used this melody in an Art Song for Alto & Viola.

Everlong was released as a single in 1997 from the Foo Fighters' second album, The Colour And The Shape. This dark and hard-hitting song, with elements of grunge and metal, grabbed the world's attention and soon shot to the top 5 on the Billboard charts; it remains one of the band's signature songs to this day, and was in fact the last song performed live by drummer Taylor Hawkins before his death. This piece was written in memory of my father. So many childhood memories of Dad revolved around water-summer vacations spent with my family camping by a mountain stream, fishing in a lake and outings to ocean beaches near my childhood home in Southern California. This programmatic work is in three movements.

  1. A Cool Mountain Stream utilizes the pentatonic scale to depict a stream as it meanders along, frequently bouncing over rocks and sometimes heading down a slope, eventually ending in a small waterfall that empties into a deep pool. During a summer vacation, my family camped by a stream that was a natural waterslide. We spent many happy hours sliding down the waterslide into the pool below.
  2. A Quiet Morning on the Lake uses the repetitive rocking motion of the piano to represent the soothing motion of the rowboat as I spent summer vacations fishing for trout with my dad on a quiet lake in the San Bernardino Mountains.
  3. Frolic in the Surf brings out the playfulness felt at the ocean beach, while getting used to the water temperature and trying to predict when the waves will hit the shore. Many summer days were spent on Southern California beaches with family and friends, body surfing, tanning and simply playing in the waves.

Phyllis Avidan Louke (b. 1954), a flutist, teacher, and award-winning composer, living in Portland, Oregon, has been arranging and composing since 1990, with over 70 pieces published.  Many of her works have received recognition in the annual National Flute Association Newly Published Music Competition and other composition competitions.  Ms. Louke has also been the recipient of annual ASCAP awards since 2004.  Her compositions and arrangements have been much-performed nationally and internationally and many have been recorded.  She is also the co-author of an award-winning series of pedagogical publications for the flute published by Theodore Presser Company.  Her music is published by Theodore Presser Company, ALRY Publications, Falls House Publications, Fabulous Flute Music Company, Nourse Wind Publications, and SMP Publications.

The chords begin piano on a rocking rhythm. The choir is forte by measure 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death. It is suggested that Süssmayr used materials from Credo of one of Mozart's earlier masses (Mass in C major, K. 220 Sparrow) in completing this movement.

This double choir a cappella arrangement of Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem KV626 is faithful but challenging. 

Soprano's are required to reach top b's for this arrangement to work well.

Hidden Cove intermediate piano sheet music is written in 5/4 with a gentle 3+2 pattern.

The right hand features middle-voice melody, where the student must practice voice leading. Sections of harmonic sixths walk up and down the piano. There are 4 measures with octaves.

The left hand is a basic pattern of fifths and then broken chords.

This makes a peaceful intermediate piano solo for recitals.

Teaching Tips for Hidden Cove intermediate piano sheet music

The emphasis of this piece is the 5/4 meter. Be sure your student can capture a gentle ebb and flow with the meter. It is to be very natural, not forced.

There is a basic melody that is repeated in both inner voices and outer voices. Helping the student identify the melody throughout the piece will help them in learning it.

There are three basic left hand patterns: open fifths, rocking fifths, and then simple broken chords (root - fifth - root).

Read the imagery description above to your student to help them capture the essence of this piece.
