By mixing the rhythms, motifs, and articulations of the Red, Yellow, and Blue etudes, the secondary etudes are made. Orange, Green, and Violet are then further mixed using the same technique to form the tertiary etudes of Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-Green, Blue-Violet, and Red-Violet. Program Note: Affects, written in 2016, is a piece for string quartet that depicts the human emotions of grief, fear, anger, and sadness. Grief is a moderate paced movement where the different instruments respond to the loss of bond and affection in the human condition. Fear begins with a solo cello line that experiments with tonality. Each instrument is introduced with the same line, essentially building up the tension and confusion that is caused when humans exhibit fear. Anger uses a quick, rushed tempo similar to the fast, exerted force that is caused when humans express anger. Often, humans find themselves acting before they think, which is how the instruments interact with each other in this movement. The string quartet culminates in a slow, brooding movement, Sadness, where the themes are exhibited and built upon in a contrapuntal motion. Humans express sadness with misery, which is shown in the heavy lines of the instruments. Five reed instruments play together, but the alto saxophone, knowing a world outside this classical-style reed quintet, chafes under the conformity and briefly plays a solo before returing to the fold. This alternation between the quintet playing together and the sax interrupting with a solo continues, causing tensions to boil. Both the ensemble sections and the solo sections become more chaotic, before the whole ensemble breaks from its constraints and begins playing in a bebop style. The oboe tries to restore order, however, and one by one, the other instruments other than the sax return to their initial classical-style playing, choosing to play the initial section in reverse. The sax, furious, rages at the other instruments to broaden their thinking, and in response, each instrument introduces its own, unique solo. The oboe is the last to join in the fun, but gives in at last, before all five instruments make one final outburst at the end of the piece.
