SKU: A0.1023335

Composed by Kristian S Rodriguez. 20th Century,Contemporary,Latin. 10 pages. Kristian S. Rodriguez #5191597. Published by Kristian S. Rodriguez (A0.1023335).

I composed this piece as part of a larger song cycle, Colores mexicanos, which I wrote as part of

an undergraduate thesis, Colores mexicanos: The Mexican Art Song and Setting Mexican Texts to Music (2016). This cycle explores various texts from various perspectives throughout Mexican history, culture, and society, while reflecting influences from Mexican folk and academic music within the composition.

Si yo nunca... is the second piece in the cycle, and like the first, it features text from the Cantares mexicanos, written by Mexica authors during the beginning of the Spanish viceroyalty period in the 16th century. This text uses vague, abstract language to emphasize the idea that human culture never truly disappears, and it’s fitting for a state freshly defeated by another civilization. The musical setting features the Andulusian cadence, a compositional device frequently used in Latin American music, distorted across various octaves and in various figures, as the singer suggests that there is more after death, a fitting metaphor for an ancient yet very active culture that still pervades Mexican society today.

Composed by Traditional English Carol. Arranged by Natalyn Rodriguez. Christian,Christmas. Score. 3 pages. Natalyn Rodriguez Music #4404440. Published by Natalyn Rodriguez Music (A0.954897).

This one is sure to surprise listeners at a winter recital or Christmas event! Not only does the piece begin in a minor key, but it starts out quick and exciting, with the melody in a rhythmically-altered state! Then, it gradually slows down and gets softer. Suddenly, the melody as we usually know it is there, in a major key, in a slow tempo. Sincere, simple, and solemn. Then, it grows in expression, and then, almost to the end of the melody, something unexpected happens: it goes back to the fast tempo and minor key once more! The piece finishes off quietly, back to the major key, with the melody off in the distance, and is left with a final note before going silent.

Small Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1023334

Composed by Kristian S Rodriguez. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 15 pages. Kristian S. Rodriguez #5191591. Published by Kristian S. Rodriguez (A0.1023334).

Five reed instruments play together, but the alto saxophone, knowing a world outside this classical-style reed quintet, chafes under the conformity and briefly plays a solo before returing to the fold. This alternation between the quintet playing together and the sax interrupting with a solo continues, causing tensions to boil. Both the ensemble sections and the solo sections become more chaotic, before the whole ensemble breaks from its constraints and begins playing in a bebop style. The oboe tries to restore order, however, and one by one, the other instruments other than the sax return to their initial classical-style playing, choosing to play the initial section in reverse. The sax, furious, rages at the other instruments to broaden their thinking, and in response, each instrument introduces its own, unique solo. The oboe is the last to join in the fun, but gives in at last, before all five instruments make one final outburst at the end of the piece.
