Howard (A0.998788). The church of All Saints Tudeley, outside Maidstone in Kent (England) has stained glass windows like few other churches. Fairly unusually, all of the current windows were designed by a single person, the great Russian twentieth-century artist Marc Chagall. They make for a dazzling spectacle in that small church, as they are characterised by strong, bold colours. However, behind their commissioning lies a heart-wrenching true story as they commemorate the tragic death of a young local girl in a boating accident. This piano piece aims to reflect some of the poignancy of these images. The work is characterised by a constant ostinato pedal (a repeated pattern on a single note). Around this, various triadic harmonies are juxtaposed, as the piece gradually makes what may be interpreted as a 'heavenly' ascent in pitch to the piano's highest register. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and advanced players.

This is a piece for piano in C major with a fairly free style which lasts around 3 and a half minutes. It is quite advanced. The piece begins with an introduction, after which there are some short fugato sections and with quite difficult and fast passages that lead to a slower Eb major section. There is then a repeat of some of the introduction until a very fast passage follows. Then there is another slow section but in E major, which suddenly ends after a while with a loud and interrupting C major chord that brings on a short and fast passage of octaves. The piece ends with a succession of strong chords.

A fairly large scale arrangement of the three entractes from Bizet's Carmen for flute choir. Each movement has a different character - the first is march-like, the second lilting and romantic, and the third is full of spanish fire. The first movement is relatively straightforward featuring bass and alto flute solos. The second requires sustained playing in the third octave from flute one in particular, and the third requires nimble fingerwork from all players and strong tonguing to bring out the spanish feel. At around 6 minutes long, this is a nice suite to include in a concert.

I believe Optimism is a truly important view to have on life. Sometimes, you just have to look on the bright side! Unfortunately, there cannot always be happiness. If there was no sadness, you would not recognize or appreciate the happiness. There has to be opposition in order to feel anything. Without sadness and pain there would be no joy and happiness. That's why I wrote this song the way I did. In the beginning, it starts fairly happy and exciting! But then, sadness enters and even a bit of anger. It adds great contrast to the end which feels even more exciting and elated! I hope this song helps you feel optimistic, excited, and happy!

The rhythm and timing and following of the sheet music are where the dificulty in this piece lie. The strum pattern is set out in the initial bars, if a new strum pattern comes in it is indicated. I would work on the main strum pattern and then work on the rhythm in the chorus bars. You may want to try different effects and distortion to get the sound you want, especially for the solo. All in all this piece is for people who have a been playing for a while and have a strong sense of rhythm al though it could be learned by anyone although it would take newer players longer to grasp the changing rhythms.
