Katydids create a loud, raspy, three-pulsed song by rubbing their front wings together.  They sing to each other in the trees at night, with a continuous ka-ty-did.
Dance of the Katydids begins by imitating their sound, using the gourd with scratcher.  After the intro, one katydid starts the dance, and more and more join in.  The katydids(the gourd) continue to the end of the dance.  The composer hopes this piece won't bug anybody!
All parts are written within the range of young elementary grade musicians.  To produce a full sound, many instruments double other instruments, i.e. Eb sax and French horn, low brass and tenor sax, flute and oboe.

Entrance of the Matador evokes the anticipatory excitement of the bull ring.  Will the matador triumph of will he met his demise?  The music builds throughout, from the matador's entrance to the final minutes of the life or death scenario.  Once the last note is played, the audience must answer the question for themselves.  Who has fate smiled upon?  The bull or the matador?
This piece is written in three part harmonization and comes complete with full score and parts for
violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello and string bass.  Viola doubles 2nd violin and cello doubles string bass for a rich, full-sounding, three part harmony.  All parts are in 1st position.

Despite his short life (1797-1828), Franz Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of Western classical music, including symphonies, sacred music, operas, and a large body of piano and chamber works.  Of all his pieces, perhaps his most famous is his serenade, often referred to as Schubert's Serenade.  This simple arrangement for beginning elementary band will be very likely a favorite on your program.

Of all church hymns, a longstanding classic is the upbeat, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms by
A.J. Showalter.  Written all the way back in 1887, I can still hear the choir and congregation belting out this wonderful hymn, while the piano and organ accompany them at full force.  This arrangement for elementary band begins with the verse in a very laid-back, cantabile style.  The chorus then joins in, led by snare drums in a stirring march style.  Great moving lower brass lead all to a big broad ending. This piece is a perennial audience favorite, and one your group will enjoy performing time and again.

Join Right In  That's exactly what the flutes and oboes tell the clarinets!  Next, the clarinets invite the

Danny and the Juniors had a #1 hit with a At the Hop in the 1950's.  For those too young to remember that great piece of rock and roll fun, here's a contemporary take on the way they do it down under, The Kangaroo Hop.  So, put on your dancing shoes for a lively, bouncy tune with an easy-to-remember melody and some rousing lower brass to keep it moving.  Get out on the floor and have fun! Can't dance?  Then just hop!  Your audience will be snapping their fingers to  this one, and your group will want to play it again and again!

A copy cat imitates and mimics another and a cha-cha is a Latin American dance.  Put them together and you have a vibrant piece where the instruments in the band do just that in a South American style! After a short intro, the trumpets begin with a catchy melody, then the clarinets jump in to repeat it.  
Next, the trumpets reprise what the clarinets and flutes just played!  Then the flutes get their chance to play the melody, the saxes their opportunity, and everybody gets into the act, all the way down to the deep, low brass.  When the piece concludes and the applause dies down, the audience will be humming and whistling this melody all the way to the parking lot!  And this piece will undoubtedly be a favorite of your students as well.
