Theoverall dynamic increases to a climax when the higher parts take the main theme and then it dramatically returns to a single solo line which then fades. The soloist and glockenspiel echo gently as the music fades away to nothing, with snare rolls whispering.I imagined an Ancient Celtic woman singing a lullaby to her baby son as his father and other men go off to fight in their ships. The music contains her sadness and some descriptive touches of the harsh environment in which she lives. Bach  bwv 1029   This beautiful sonata (which could easily have been another Brandenburg concerto if Bach had chosen to orchestrate it)  is too good to be just for violists and cellists. So here’s an arrangement in the Treble clef, which can be played  by FLUTE, or VIOLIN, or SAX, or OBOE, or GUITAR instead of the original solo part in the viola clef.  Also,  the key has been transposed from G minor to A minor.  Except for 2 measures in the first movement it is all playable without any octave jumps.  (those 2 measures have the higher octave alternative written above the original for the wind instruments that can’t go down to A.) The accompanying keyboard part is available in many print editions and also can be downloaded from public domain sites like IMSLP. Clarinet, Soprano and Tenor Sax,  can play accompanied by a real piano reading the original keyboard part.  All the other instruments can be accompanied by an electronic keyboard reading the original part if the keyboard  presses the appropriate transpose button.     Steve Newman                            Nov 2017                newmans@cruzio.com

The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyel's career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s. He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyel's productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Pleyel's three Trios Concertants, as they are styled in the earliest extant editions, appeared in 1787. Unlike the composer's quartets and quintets, which are generally in three movements, the string trios are cast in two movements - an opening Allegro and a Rondo - a practice unusual in Vienna but popular in France. The use of the term 'concertant' in the title signifies an equality of parts; that is, each of the instruments in the ensemble plays an important role in presenting thematic material. Pleyel's trios share many stylistic qualities with his quartets and quintets. His feel for the medium is at once apparent in his impressive exploitation of contrasting musical textures which range from bold, homophonic writing in a quasi-orchestral style to brief sections of canonic writing.
