Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, particularly in the maritime armed services. Written in 1860, its author William Whiting was inspired by the dangers of the sea described in Psalm 107. John B. Dykes, an Anglican clergyman, composed the tune Melita to accompany the text in 1861. This version is for standard woodwind quintet, and includes an optional bass clarinet part for ensembles with no bassoon. The three movements, Fantazy, Pavan and Aire have been arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, bassoon and horn in F for players of advanced intermediate standard. The metronome speed indicated is for guidance only and players should feel free to add decorations such as trills where they seem to be appropriate. The contrapuntal style requires the five players to listen carefully to each other and provides an opportunity to develop the feel of being a quintet rather than five players playing the same piece.
