Interplay was composed for the Maxwell Trio, an ensemble consisting of Kansas State University faculty members with the unusual combination of instruments of bassoon, tuba, and piano. It was premiered at the 2013 International Double Reed Society Conference. The composition can be performed with trombone or euphonium substituting for the bassoon and bass clarinet substituting for the tuba (parts are provided). The title of this three-movement work was derived from the large use of counterpoint throughout the composition. The first movement is in a quasi sonata form. The second movement is in an ABA form. The middle section of this movement uses an ostinato to accompany the melodic interplay. The last movement is lighter than the first two movements and utilizes a loose rondo form. Its allegro tempo and frequent meter changes add a humorous quality. The interplay in this movement relies less on counterpoint. Instead, the shifting of colors through alternating the melodic material among the three instruments creates interplay between sections within the rondo form.

The 21st Century Clarinet Symphony is comprised of a clarinet octet made up of Bb soprano, Alto, and Bass clarinets. The work contains four movements which each have their own unique charm and quirks. The first movement is based on the sonata-allegro form and features two distinct melodies. The second movement is chorale-like in nature and makes use of the full choir's sound. This movement also places parts into pairs that shift every eight bars. The third movement is a minuet and trio. This movement features the upper four parts playing melodic content while the lower four parts provide the foundation and motor functions the drive the movement forward. The fourth movement is a rondo which features three distinct sections. The A section opens the piece and is heard four times total. The B section is heard twice and features high rhythmic contrast to the A section as well as featuring different lines playing the melody.  The C section of this movement provides a radical change from both the A and B sections of the piece as it features both bass clarinets in a duo setting with minimal accompaniment from other voices. I wrote Minor Celebration in my sheet music, since it has an upbeat tempo and is in a minor key, and I have a reason to celebrate: two years without a single drop of alcohol! I think my influences come through a lot in my composing. In this piece in particular, the ones that are most apparent to me are: Mozart, Beethoven, Inti-Illimani (group), and Koji Kondo. Especially my opening theme, which is based on Beethoven's F Minor Sonata opening, just in reverse (it also hints at Mozart's D Minor Concerto). It took me about a week to compose this movement from start to finish. I will upload movements 2, 3, and 4 when they are finished. The plan is for: II. Andante (Minuet and Trio), III. Set in Rondo form, this piece tells an accurate depiction of a common day to day experience. We all in a way start off usually feeling fine like how the melody in the A Theme sounds, but then through the journey of the day meet some other conflict or competition that clashes with our calmness and causes an ensuing struggle. This piece was inspired by Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas, primarily Sonata in C Minor No. 8 “Pathetique�.

This concerto is in the traditional three movement format with the first and third movements being fast and the middle movement slow.  The second and third movements are most like a blues work.  The first movement is a rondo format, is not particularly bluesy.  A Les Paulâ„¢ guitar would play particularly well in this movement.  The second movement switches between the soloist as the distorted guitar sound to the vocalist as the clean guitar sound.  The final movement is happy, upbeat, and lively good time blues.  In the second and third movements in particular, the basses (cello, double bass) should be easily heard. At the end of the third movement, the precisionist on the drum set should improvise a loud, untimed measure, solo utilizing all the drums and cymbals in the set ending with four moderately paced and slowing beats on the snare drum.  A momentary pause, then the final chord. The guitarist will need at least one foot pedal for distortion enabling him/her to switch between a clean sound and a distorted sound.  The guitar should be the equivalent of a Fenderâ„¢ Stratocaster or Telecaster guitar; a Gibsonâ„¢ Les Paul would do nicely also.  The music is partially fingered leaving the player the opportunity to interpret the part.  The work is after the fashion of Chicago style blues of the 1960’s.  The conductor and guitarist may wish to listen to recordings by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, John Lee Hooker, John Mayall and the Blues Breakers, B.B. King, etc. to get a feel for the music of the 1960’s blues bands.  It would be highly desirable to use an organ, for the 3rd movement, that can produce a Hammond B3â„¢ with Leslie sound, as that instrument was widely used in blues of that period.  Although some of the notes notated as harmonics (h) in the score can be played as fretted notes, playing them as natural and artificial harmonics provides an interesting change of tonality.  The orchestral part is not particularly challenging.  The concerto is approx. 17 minutes in length.
