In 1853 Charles Czerny composed a set of 20 easy piano pieces which he called Amusement des Jeunes Amateurs (Amusement for Young Amateurs); they were subtitled Petites et Brillantes Recreations (Small and Brilliant Recreations).   Let's just say they are easy fun little pieces! All of the pieces were loosely based on a folk song or a popular theme from a classical composer. One of them was based on a popular folk Russian polka, so he called it Polka Russe.I have taken Polka Russe and freely arranged it for Instrumental Trio, using some of Czerny's themes, re-arranging them into parts, and also re-ordering them into my own Rondo. Form is Intro-ABACADA-Coda. I have broken up his melodies and spread them across all three parts; each part is of equal importance and each part independently adds to the stunning melodic weaving. Parts are mostly scales and arpeggios. It requires careful counting and close attention to rhythmic interplay, but sounds quite advanced and dramatic when all details are observed.    This piece is really quite Easy, I have just marked it Early Intermediate because of the Allegretto vivace tempo, the note range (two octaves), and the necessary counting. A fun piece to show your technique and musicianship as a group in any concert.  1:45 minutes, 8 pages score, 3 pages @ part(Temporary recording of piano reduction of parts)

The first theme (mm 5–20) should have a very ethereal, mysterious character, which is characterized by its key of g minor. The second theme (mm 21–28) is somewhat brighter, with the sun trying to work its way through the mists. The mists conquer the sun as the first theme returns (mm 33–40). Finally, the sun is victorious and shines brightly through the mists (mm 41–54). Notice how the music moves to a major key and the piano accompaniment is much more energetic and joyful. Your playing should convey those feelings. As night falls, though, the mists move back in as the first theme returns once again, and the whole piece fades into calm, mist-covered darkness.

In 1853 Charles Czerny took this polka tune and created a piano etude as part of his set Amusement des Juenes Amateurs. I have taken some of his themes and adapted and arranged them for instrumental solo. I have assembled them into a Rondo form: Intro-A-B-A-C-A-D-A-Coda.  It is an etude (study) to sharpen your playing of scales, arpeggios, melodic interval leaps, and various articulations. But it doesn't at all sound like an exercise because of the playful nature of the polka. This dramatic piece shows your technical accomplishments while delivering a crowd pleasing tune with great flourish.I have marked it as Intermediate in difficulty as a general average. The notes and rhythms are Easy, the quick Tempo makes it Early Intermediate, and the range which is a half step beyond a full 2 octaves makes it Advanced Intermediate for some instruments.3 pages, 1:45 minutesTemporary recording of piano playing instrument part.

One of that set was called Roadside Inn, which I have arranged for Instrumental Solo with Piano Accompaniment. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, and themes. I took themes and fragments of themes from the original and re-ordered them into a bit of a rondo form. There are interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. Another feature is the beautiful harmonic interplay between the solo and accompaniment. To be played warmly and with passion to welcome people to your Roadside Inn.  2 1/2 minutes, 5 page score, 2 page solo partTemporary MIDI recording; a live performance will be much more expressive and free.

The four movements, Learning to Climb, The Intrepid Explorer, Rondo for a Lost Kitten, Rescued, were inspired by the delightful poem, A Kitten's Adventure, by Australian writer Linda Johnston. Rhythms are straightforward and readable by most students at elementary level. Second parts for flute, clarinet, trumpet and alto sax are suitable for quite junior players, but are not essential to the work. Parts for less common instruments are provided, but not essential. The bass is covered in trombone, baritone and tenor sax parts, in case tuba is not available. Percussion parts can be played on whatever instruments are available. The style of the work is descriptive and classically based, and would make an effective contrast to your band's usual repertoire.
