A fun piece for Flute and piano or recorder and harpsichord. Originally written in 2006 for Rachel Johnson to play, it is a great piece to add some sparkle to a flute recital or a concert. The title has no real meaning (other than that the piece is a rondo) although it sounds vaguely Spanish, but it was just two rhyming words that came into my head while I was listening to it. At just over two minutes, it is not too taxing on the stamina of either soloist or piano.

I could only find about 6 bars of this melody: the rest is mine. Aeolian mode.Lullaby: this lovely melody uses the Hitzaz scale, which is common in Greek regions and found in Africa, North America and Spain.Hymn for Matins: this is the oldest Greek Orthodox chant I can find. It is from the 13th C Sticherarion and printed in modern notation in JISOCM Vol 4 (2), p357. Nowadays, chanting there is often a solo, often by a woman, but I believe parallel organum was heard in Greece from the 16th C. Modern services include 4- part hymns. I present all three styles.Song of the Dead Brothers is a complex 9th C Byzantine mourning poem which has since been set to music many times. (The nine brothers died.) I found this phrygian setting from Karystos.

It has become one of the most instantly recognisable of Mozart’s melodies. It derives its title from the Turkish style marching bands that were fashionable in Vienna at the time. This version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Viola. Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest. The duet format gives solo instrumentalists an opportunity to play music written for piano. The overall performance time is around three and a half minutes. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with ensemble skills. There are various ornaments to negotiate, detailed articulation and a wide range of dynamics. Two years later Mendelssohn wanted to present the work to the young piano virtuoso Delphine von Schauroth, whom he was courting at the time. He reworked it under the new title Rondo capriccioso, making it even more brilliant and adding a moving introductory adagio (thus described in a letter to Fanny). In this form, the work still presents all good pianists with a rewarding challenge. I did a bravoure piece for flute and orchestra respecting the Mendelssohn style.
