Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was an English composer, organist and virginalist of the Elizabethan and late Jacobean periods.  Despite his early death he nevertheless produced a number of the most celebrated vocal, choral, instrumental and keyboard works of that rich period in English music. This Pavan (later included in The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book) is the first part of the famous Pavan and Galliard (The Lord Salisbury), which has become one of his best-known compositions to have entered the present-day repertory. It has been performed and recorded many times, most notably perhaps by Glenn Gould in 1970.

It was subsequently reworked for piano solo (as Cradle Song for Lewis), and also became the basis of a set of variations for French horn and organ with Christmas narration. I produced this arrangement for SS and piano for a Christmas concert in St Albans, given by the Alban Young Singers and Dacorum Junior Singers (conductor, Marie Price) in December 2008.

Very little is known of his life, although he certainly served as parish clerk of St Dunstan-in-the-West Church on Fleet Street, London from 1564 to 1575 and from whence he oversaw the musical output there. Several of his compositions have survived including vocal, choral and instrumental works. He is best known, perhaps, for several pieces that were included in The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, of which this Fantasia is one.

With no known organ arrangement suitable for a service recessional available, this setting of On, Wisconsin! was written specifically for the occasion by Deborah Krauss, Organist/Director of Music at Asbury United Methodist Church at that time.
