La Folia is a ground that’s been used by many composers over the centuries, including Corelli (Violin Sonata Op. 5, no. 12) and Vivaldi (Trio Sonata, Op. 1 no. 12), and more recently, Rachmaninoff (Variations on a Theme of Corelli) and Manuel Ponce (Variations sur Folia de España et fugue), and more recently still, Glen Shannon’s La Follia Variations for recorder ensemble. Many of these pieces are quite long to listen to, but are written for a variety of instruments and a variety of styles. Perhaps it will inspire you to try and write a variation yourself. You can have your teacher play the ground and you play your variation at the same time to see if you like how it sounds together. Warning! DO NOT start this piece too fast! The opening theme is very easy, but after every eight bars, each variation becomes more difficult as you Level Up through the piece. This Baroque piece was originally written by Jean Loeillet as part of a Harpsichord Suite.  It is written in the Italian Corant style in the characteristic Fast(Allegro) 3/4 with rapid running passages of eighth notes (quavers) which alternate scalar steps with large leaps.  Traditionally the piece would have been performed very cleanly, not legato.My arrangement takes the melody and passes it between the three instrument parts.  I wrote a highly ornamented continuo for each part when not playing melody.  In true Baroque style I have created a tight interplay between the parts.  Each part also has a rather wide range of about 2 octaves.  Although in a Minor Key, this piece is very bright and uplifting.  It is very accessible and thus a concert crowd pleaser.   Great for the student recitals too to learn and show mastery of Baroque techniques of clean ensemble playing and ornamentation.  Most of all, this piece is just Pure Fun!6 pages score, 2 pages @ partRanges -Flute -  second space A to high A above staffClarinet - second line G# to high D above staffBass Clarinet - low E below staff to high E above staff.

Faure’s piano duet entitled Dolly Suite is here arranged by Philip Le Bas for a wind sextet, consisting of a standard wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon) plus bass clarinet. The bass clarinet gives the music more sonority and it allows the arranger more opportunity to bring out Faure’s sumptuous harmonies. Dolly was the nickname of the baby daughter of Emma Bardac, with whom Faure had a long-running affair, and each of the pieces has a slightly different association with childhood.1)   The Berceuse (lullaby) is best remembered as the theme tune to the BBC’s Listen with Mother, and its tune is indelibly marked into the memories of generations of radio listeners between 1950 and 1982. It was written for Dolly’s first birthday. (An alternative part for clarinet in A is available for this movement, to avoid the otherwise slightly tricky key signature of F sharp major!)2)   Mi-a-ou has nothing to do with cats, but is a version of Dolly’s first attempts to pronounce the name of her brother Raoul. Written for her second birthday, it is a delicate and playful scherzo with lots of cross-rhythms for the instruments.3)   Le Jardin de Dolly is regarded by some as the best piece in the collection, with its gorgeous tune and unexpected harmonies, creating an impressionistic picture of a beautiful, peaceful French garden.4)   Kitty-Valse again has nothing to do with cats but with the family dog Ketty, who whirls round and round, in unrelenting cheerfulness.5)   In Tendresse Faure introduces more chromatic harmonies, used in his later works. As its name and its key of D flat suggests, the music here seems to express deep and shifting emotions associated with intimate relationships, while retaining a sense of calm and comfort throughout.6)   The last piece, Le Pas Espagnole is a thrilling journey across the border into the exotic Spanish world of dance. There is much in common with Chabrier’s Espana, and here the wind players can enjoy playing at full tilt in an exciting and tuneful end to the suite.

The Boar's Head Carol This Christmas carol talks about a feast during midwinter in which a wild boar was served as the main dish and its head placed in a situated position to symbolize bravery and abundance. Closely related to the Norse tradition of boar sacrifice to their goddess Freyja during the feast of Winter Solstice, this song originated from an urban legend in Queen's College, Oxford back in the 15th century which tells of how a scholar from Queen’s College managed to kill an attacking boar and offered it at dinner.The song was first published in English during the 1520’s in a book entitled Christmase Carolles Newly Emprynted at London in the flete street, which was written by Jan van Wynken de Worde. It is also said to be the very 1st Christmas carol to ever be publish in English because it dates back that early.Although the modern versions of the song makes no mention of Christmas, the original verses does so in The boar's head we bring with song, in worship of Him that thus sprung, of a Virgin to redress all wrong; Noel This Intermediate Level arrangement starts out in C Major and modulates to D Major for the final chorus .Performance time is approx. 1 minute 45 seconds.

Explore 6/8 and 9/8 meters in this exciting Winter Frolic.  Although the piece is in D major, it challenges students to have many musical conversations as the melody gets tossed around between the different sections.  The two main themes provide a contrast between the smooth slurs reminiscent of skating on a pond, to the crunchy snow theme that allows students to explore spiccato.  The percussion parts are optional but can add that extra little sparkle.
