This is a simple arrangement of the evocative and affirming Precious Memories.  Whether to honor seniors or as a memorial, few songs extend a sense of thanks and gratitude as this.The first verse is a woman's solo; she's joined by a second woman for the verse.  The chorus then takes over.I've attributed Emmylou Harris' copyright to this because of the extended measures in the final section.  She's not the only person to use a 4/4 2/4, but thanks to her (and it's a good thanks), I can no longer think of the chorus in strict 4/4.

The mp3 is of the composer performing it and unfortunately the person recording it did not get the audience applause at the end which was an immediate enthusiastic standing ovation.

By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a lead sheet for a jazz combo or ensemble, a good basis for a variety of arrangements, improvisations, or contrafacts. The audio sample is my melody from Finale PrintMusic, combined with an iReal Pro swing accompaniment. I’ve designated the melody for solo violin, an instrument that I would like to see and hear more often in jazz ensembles.  You will hear a violin carry the melody in the audio sample. Playing the solo on violin solves a possible difficulty in performance. Problem:  This piece may be too challenging for many wind instrument players (brass, woodwind). Solution:  This piece is well suited to a non-wind instrument player!  Violin springs to mind. Violin is especially appropriate here:  This tune has lots of notes; similar to a solo violin partita prelude or up-tempo dance movement by J. S. Bach.  A wind instrument player told me that finding spots for taking a breath was a challenge. This is not to discourage wind players from experimenting with the piece, adjusting it in places if necessary.  A wind player may include more breathing spots for relief in his or her improvisation! Many of us may not be aware that Franz Schubert's famous Marche Militaire in D is only the first in a set of three military marches for piano duet published in 1826. This is a colorful arrangement the third Marche Militaire in E-flat for concert band. It's a little gem with enough delightful melody, high spirits, and audience appeal to stand proudly beside its renowned sibling.This arrangement interprets Schubert's march for a modern band, but it alludes to the sound of early 20th century European marches. As performed by Eva Eugenio.  This arrangement of Katakataka grew out of a desire to introduce our classes to the culture and music of the Philippines. While we have several Filipino students in our choirs, we were surprised at how little the non-Filipino students knew of this wonderful and diverse group of islands. In the process of learning this piece, in addition to getting a small sample of the Tagalog language spoken in many parts of the Philippines, we took time to study its history and geography as well as the history and evolution of it’s music - from native instruments, to the Spanish influence and beyond. Additionally we spent time learning a fun Filipino dance called Tinikling and included that dance as part of our performance. Any combination of C instruments would work including violins, flutes, and Orff percussion just to name a few. A good guitar player could replace the piano part to make it more authentically Filipino. My Filipino students were a great help in learning the language and there are several resources available on YouTube and beyond that will aid in better understanding and performing this work.

The Trio in C Major, Op. 87 for Two Oboes and English horn is one of Beethoven’s greatest pieces of chamber music for wind instruments. Experienced oboists are sure to be familiar with this work, and likely have studied it and performed it many times. Beethoven wrote so beautifully and brilliantly for woodwinds, and I wish he had written more chamber music for winds! Audiences always love to hear this piece performed, and I never tire of performing or teaching it. Now, with my transcription for oboe, English horn, and bassoon, you can invite a flutist and a bassoonist friend to join in the fun! This Adagio cantabile movement (the second of four movements) is beautiful, soulful, and melodious. It is enjoyable to play and to listen to, suitable for advanced students or professionals. Students will learn so much about phrasing, articulation, dynamics, balance, and expression from studying this piece; and the level of musicality in this work is suitable for a professional performance. It would work well in a chamber music recital or student recital, and is a good length and seriousness for church offertory music. Duration is approximately 4.5 minutes.
