He graduated in Ljubljana and studied music in Prague, Vienna (Joseph Marx), Paris (Schola cantorum) and Basel (Felix Weingartner).He spent many years teaching composition at the Ljubljana Academy of Music, teaching composers such as Nada Ludvig-Pe�ar, Zvonimir Cigli� and Janez Mati�i� whilst serving as a chancellor for a period and was a pianist, conductor, music writer, and director of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra based in the country's capital.His style reflected late romanticism with qualities of expressionism and impressionism in his pieces, often with a hyperbolic artistic temperament, juxtaposing the dark against melodic phrases in his music.Škerjanc was liberal in his attitude to music and multifaceted in his works. During rehearsal, I heard the amazing cello sound, that is a sound that I adored, it was the most amazing sound that I have ever heard, I was totally obsessed with the instrument, and I listen to cello concerto every day. Haydn, Dvorak, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Schumann. I was totally obsessed with the instrument! Then I thought, why don’t I write a cello concerto by myself? That’s why I composed this piece. I was inspired by Sergei Prokofiev's Toccata, Op. 11 and his 7th Piano Sonata 3rd movement, Op. 83. I use the chromatic and whole tone scales extensively.
