Stewart (A0.1211960). “What If I Seek for Love� (1601), by English composer Robert Jones (c.1577-1617), who was one of the most prolific composers and lutenists of his day.  Of the more popular musical forms of English Renaissance (the late 15th century to the early 1600’s) was the lute song: a piece for single voice accompanied by the lute.  Most lute songs are about love and tended to be a rather melancholy affair with disdainful ladies refusing to acknowledge the ardent advances of hopeful lovers – as is “What If I Seek for Love�.  This 2023 setting is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble and keyboard accompaniment.  It can be performed either a cappella or with accompaniment, the SATB voicings will stand alone  The simple melody and poetry of Jones is retained and embellished with the piano accompaniment.  This is an excellent piece for young singers, introducing them to style, form and technique.  Performance time: 1:30+-.

The piece opens with angels approaching from a distance singing pastores (shepherds) followed by joyful choral couplets. Several dualities weave together representing the oneness of the human and divine: harp and piano; Venezuelan joropo rhythm derived from Spanish dance; sixteenth century text and twenty-first century music; and major and Phrygian modes. Having completed and published here a 3-part setting of Arabia's Magi sought Him and Ubi est, I came back to the computer a few months later to be reminded that I had started the project with a 4-part (SATB) setting of Ubi est?  I therefore reverse-engineered an SATB setting of Arabia's Magi to complete this short Epiphany set using my original English words for the first anthem and the Latin words of Matthew's Gospel (Ch.2, v2) for the second. Lasting around a couple of minute or so altogether, and with nothing to trap the unwary singer, these are ideal either in a Lessons and Carols service (which extends the narrative to include the Magi), as dedicated Epiphany diptych, or for use in a concert.  N.B. pages 2 & 3 are sample pages only - to save paper, please print just pages (1? &) 4-7.

Charles Wesley’s (1707-1788) Advent hymn, “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus,� from Hymns for the Nativity of our Lord (1744), reflects the dual nature of Advent for Christians, in that it recalls the first coming and incarnation of the Messiah while also anticipating His return.Each stanza presents a different idea: Stanza 1, the longing for freedom from sin and fear; Stanza 2, attributes of or names for Christ; Stanza 3, the Messiah's birth, kingdom, and purpose; and Stanza 4, a prayer for Christ's rule in believers' hearts. Among the Scriptures referenced in the hymn are 2 Corinthians 4:14, Revelation 3:21, Isaiah 61:1-2, Luke 4:18-19, and Romans 6:22. In this setting of Wesley’s text to an original tune, a short introduction is followed by verse 1, presented by women’s voices (soprano, alto) and verse 2, presented by men’s voices (tenor, bass).
