The piece builds in textural complexity and density throughout, as an attempt to depict the increasing sense of abundant love, referred to in the text. The main melodic material is deliberately simple and rather folk/chant-like. This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a four-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution on an F major chord at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SATB choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. As originally composed by Orson Pratt Huish, Come Unto Jesus has a 6/8 rhythm.  This arrangement changes the meter to 4/4 so that the piece can begin as a quiet prayer and end as a triumphant march, to match the content of Huish's text.  Scored for SATB choir, a soloist can be used for the opening and closing phrases.  The piano accompaniment becomes very full for the last verse, so a minimum of eight voices are suggested with larger choirs being more effective.  The piece begins in A-flat and ends in A-major.  The choral parts are not overly difficult; the piano accompaniment is more demanding.  Tempo should be martial for the final verse, 116-120.
