These studies help you practice your bowing, your rhythm, your note reading, fingering and scale evenness. This fan favorite features the cast of Sesame Street singing of a mysterious song to a catchy tune. Unfortunately, no one seems to know the name of that song. This piece has been performed several times on Sesame Street, in studio recordings, and on stage, both domestically and internationally. According to the Muppet wiki, this segment first debut was in Episode 666 back in 1974; this is the version this music is based on. The music is composed by Sam Pottle with lyrics by David Axelrod.

This Christmas carol has had a number of different versions, starting out in the 18th Century as a French carol, Quelle Est Cette Odeur Agreable?. It has been translated into English as What Is This Fragrance? Other lyrics were written for the same tune, such as Thou Who Wast Rich Beyond All Splendor by Frank Houghton in 1934, based on 2 Corinthians 8:9: For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich. In 1997, Houghton's wife Dorothy modernized his lyrics as Lord, You Were Rich Beyond All Splendor for the Haven of Rest Quartet to record with the title For Love's Sake. It has also been recorded by Marilyn Baker in the UK and Keith & Kristyn Getty in the UK & Ireland. This is a flexible band/choral arrangement which, in its demo configuration here, is presented by a keyboard and a double quartet of wind instruments with a string bass.The performance time is approximately 3:30.

This arrangement was created to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of the 1970 Christmas movie musical SCROOGE & the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven.  A more detailed description of this piece & the story & imaginings behind it is included in its covering pages.  However, it may be summarized by its subtitle, What If Liszt Played Beethoven While Scrooge & the Londoners Celebrated?  (Franz Liszt was performing in a European concert tour at the same time that Charles Dickens was writing A Christmas Carol in 1843. Liszt's purpose for the tour was to raise money for constructing a statue of Beethoven in his hometown of Bonn, Germany.)  The piece begins in the key of Bb for the first 3 verses of the song.  The 3rd verse consists of a variation on the melody in the style of Beethoven, perhaps as Liszt might have written & performed it.  The key is raised to C major for the final verse, which includes a few quotes from Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, and concludes with some final lines from his Choral Symphony No. 9 as well as The 5th.  The full time of performance by piano/keyboard, solo voice and/or choir is approximately 4 minutes, which may be shortened & simplified by skipping the 3rd variation verse as indicated.

Samuels (A0.828654). 2020 SMP Press Composition Contest Entry for the Popular instrumental ensemble category:  This is a flexible string/wind arrangement of the incidental music for the closing credits of Sylvester Stallone's first ROCKY movie. (According to Wikipedia: The film, made on a budget of just over $1 million, was a sleeper hit; it earned $225 million in global box office receipts, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1976... Among other accolades, it went on to receive ten Academy Award nominations, winning three, including Best Picture.)Originally, this arranger had envisioned and created this as an arrangement for wind quartet (flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon or bass clarinet). But after it was completed and shared, requests were received for a similar arrangement for string quartet (i.e., the original instrumentation used in the movie).  And so, this flexible package was created, in which the violin part is mirrored by the flute part (same key and page), the viola is mirrored by a clarinet, the cello is mirrored by a horn, and the string bass is mirrored by a bassoon/bass clarinet/euphonium.  So, virtually any combination of these instruments may be used to form a quartet, or even a double quartet!  The duration is approximately 2.5 minutes. NOTE: The YouTube link leads to a wind quartet rendition.
