Six Duos for Trombones, Op. 50 by Friedrich Belcke composed in 1832 may be one of the first sets of duets specifically written for Trombones. Belcke explains that the duos are all in the same key of B-flat and may be transposed into any key or clef, which adds a serious challenge for the performers beyond the initial intermediate level of the music. The Faerie Fiddler aims to make several not-so-easy techniques fun to practice and perform. These techniques include spiccato bowing, trills, and ornamentation. Development of such delicate techniques should be supervised by an experienced violin teacher. Although The Faerie Fiddler is not intended to be an etude book, I hope these elfin solos and duos will be enjoyed by both student and teacher as supplemental repertory. This complete anthology contains 15 solo pieces and 5 violin duos. Front matter is appended to the back. I've endeavored to channel mischievous Puck to sprinkle magic juice on tricky techniques by writing interesting pieces that (1) captivate the player while maintaining simple forms; (2) use woodland imagery; and (3) introduce traditional dance forms. Whimsical verses accompany the pieces and serve to (1) introduce each piece; (2) identify and highlight specific techniques (3) encourage observation of what the music is doing; (4) cast humor on the process, so that student, teacher, and writer are accomplices in the same game. The faerie fiddler techniques are reinforced throughout the book (all pieces except Raucous Rondo include spiccato bowing). Clarity and consistency are maintained in the expression markings so that the student will know when and when not to play off the string (only notes with dots are to be played off the string). The solo pieces and the Violin 2 parts of the duos are written in first position. Violin 1 parts of the duos use third position. Duo 4, Just a Dream, also uses fifth position in the upper part. Though the pieces are short and may look easy, their execution offers challenges, given the transparency of the spiccato bowing and ornamentation techniques. I hope The Faerie Fiddler will provide an enjoyable supplement to spiccato, trills, and ornamentation studies. The sample audio file presented here is the Elf Queen's Waltz.

Ottorino Respighi's Adoration of the Magi from Three Botticelli Pictures set for WOODWIND QUINTET by John Gibson. Respighi composed the Trittico in 1927 in a three movement setting of musical impressions of paintings by Botticelli. The middle movement, Adoration of the Magi makes use of the ancient Christmas season hymn, O Come, O Come, Emanuel. This setting for woodwind quintet is for flute, oboe, clarinet in A (with an alternate Bb part provided), F Horn, and bassoon. In my opinion this is suitable for advanced players, due to the depth of the music as well as challenging key signatures and instrument ranges, especially for the bassoon. I kept the key relationships the same as in the original orchestration. In the original the clarinet switches from A clarinet to Bb clarinet, and I eliminated that but have provided an optional Bb part if desired.    The short audio sample begins on page 3 of the score.
