I originally wrote Total Eclipse as an expressive Art Song for solo voice and piano.  I used several lines of poetry from Newburgh Hamilton (1741) and set them to unique music that is a fusion of Classical, Romantic, and Modern, with a touch of Pop.  The music expressively drifts from major to minor to modal every few measures, inspired by the themes of darkness and light.  When I adapted it for SATB I filled out the already rich harmony and added ethereal 'oo's under some of the melody.  In a few brief measures, at different places, SAB each will have a divisi line where it splits to 2 parts.  (The texture is never thicker than 5 parts at once.)  This approachable piece of music is a good introduction for singers to the interpretation of an Art Song and is a dramatic performance piece for concert.  And perfect for the upcoming April 8 total eclipse!(Haydn also used variations of this text to create several Recitatives and an Aria for his oratorio Samson.)  10 pages, 2:00 minutesVocal Ranges:  all 1 octave; Sop - middle C to C; Alto - low G to G; Tenor - D to C; Bass - G to Gattached recording is of the original solo voice version which SATB is closely based on.  Be the first choir to record this and send me a link which I will post.  plbeaman@gmail.comalso available on this site as a vocal solo in several keys, and as a Unison Choral hymn

Her Greatest Charm is a piano solo arrangement of the 1901 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano. I have turned this short 20 seconds ballad into a 2 minute boogie-woogie. I created a LH boogie pattern which continues the same for the long introduction with various pulsed chords over the top. The first section continues the same one chord boogie pattern and adds the 8 bar melody, with slightly altered rhythyms and articulations, above it, this section being repeated. For the second section I take the same 8 bar melody, back to the original lyrical rhythm and articulations, and reharmonize with changing chords still in the boogie pattern. He is best known for his symphonic works, but also wrote many piano pieces based on dances. I have taken his piano Gavotte and freely arranged it for Instrumental Quartet.  This brisk piece is lively with a busy texture. I have crafted 4 independent lines that are each of equal importance and the focus quickly shifts from one part to the other. The lines rhythmically weave together, answering each other. The real interest in the piece is the constantly changing and contrasting dynamics and articulation. Often every beat of the bar has a different articulation, and the individual parts rarely have the same articulation at the same time. (i.e., One part might be slurred while another part is playing staccato and yet another is accented.) This complexity of texture creates energy and excitement. A great piece to spice up any concert with a fun smile.  This composition is a fusion of multiple eras; originally written during the Romantic period, but with many Classical elements and a Baroque form and style, to which I add some Contemporary touches.  Notes and rhythms are Intermediate, but adding all of the markings at this pace makes it Advanced Intermediate.6 page score, 2 page parts2:10 minutes
