Haas hatte den Mangel an auch für Laien spiel- und singbarer Oratorienliteratur zur Weihnachtszeit beklagt. „Nichts lag näher, als die altbekannten lieben weihnachtlichen Volksweisen zu einem einheitlichen Liederspiel zu vereinigen. Als ich den Plan durchdachte, wurde es mir klar, dass sich nur solche Melodien, die der gleichen deutschen Landschaft angehören, zu einem stilistisch einwandfreien Organismus verbinden können. Der mir befreundete Münchener Gesangspädagoge, Professor Anton Schiegg, ein gründlicher Kenner süddeutscher Volkskunst, machte mich auf den kostbaren Schatz der bezaubernden oberbayerischen und tiroler Krippenlieder aufmerksam�, so beschreibt Joseph Haas die Anregung zu seinem Spiel.

Alleluia is a choral arrangement of a famous melody from the third movement of one of Mozart's best-known works, the motet Exsultate, jubilate (K. 165). The third movement was originally scored in F Major for soprano and an orchestra comprised of two oboes, two horns, strings, continuo and organ. The editor has reduced this orchestration for keyboard and has added modern clefs as well as tempo and dynamic indications where appropriate. The source for this edition is W. A. Mozarts Samtliche Werke, Series 3/2, publlished by Breitkopf and Hartel (1876-1905).

Lorem ipsum is an anonymous text that since the 15th century has been used by typographers to show the size and make of typefaces. The text distorts the original font found in Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (1.10.32-33). There are various versions of the text, some comic, others absurd or even devoid of verbal sense. In that sense it is used here so as not to disturb the musical entertainment. It functions, therefore, as vocables without any message other than the purely musical.

The complex {4 [2, 2], 3 [2, 1]}, taken from the dedicatory’s name, organizes the whole work.
