Sure on this shining night, op.13 no.3 is an art song by composer Samuel Barber from his 1938 song cycle Four Songs. The work's text is taken from James Agee's poem Descriptions of Elysium which was published in his 1934 poetry collection Permit Me Voyage by the Yale Series of Younger Poets. One of Barber's most frequently performed works, the work displays Barber's Neo-Romantic lyricism with its classically oriented formal structure and carefully crafted interplay between solo voice and piano that emphasizes canonic imitation.[1] In 1938 Barber created an orchestral arrangement for the song. Barber later reworked the art song into an SATB choral arrangement in 1961. This arrangement is for solo voice and string quartet in the original key.

This short piano piece was inspired by Kapustin’s Prelude Op. 53 no.5 which was introduced to me by pianist/teacher Josh Ebling. A mix of the atmosphere and harmonies of that piece combined with Samuel Barbers Blues from Excursions served as a vague framework for me on this little character piece. Longing is an emotion I think all humans feel from time to time and hopefully that feeling comes across in the music. The composition is of intermediate to advanced level.

Music for Springtime was inspired in part by Samuel Barber's woodwind quintet Summer Music, a staple of the repertoire written in 1956. My work is a not an homage to Barber's, but does reflect and touch upon some of the moods and character changes heard in Summer Music. Music for Springtime was also shaped by the circumstances and timing of its composition: I wrote it in the year after I moved from California back to my native Pennsylvania, shortly after the birth of my daughter, and mostly in the springtime. Thoughts of rebirth and rejuvenation, but also of the uncertainty of transition, were undoubtedly present while I wrote.

I have loved Barber's beautiful Sure on This Shining Night for years, and thought it would work well for cello ensemble. I adapted the piano and vocal parts into seven cello parts, with Cello I playing the vocal line, and Cello II playing the secondary melody line from the right hand of the piano. The Cello III-VII parts are generally more simple, so it is possible to play this arrangement with a mix of experience levels -- perfect for a festival, school, or cello studio to perform. If you can't find six cellists, enjoy the challenge of recording all seven parts yourself!

The arrangement is about 2:30 in duration.

The composer writes, of 'Souvenirs': In 1952 I was writing some duets for one piano to play with a friend, and Lincoln Kirstein suggested I orchestrate them for a ballet. Commissioned by the Ballet Society, the suite consists of a waltz, schottische, pas de deux, two step, hesitation tango, and gallop. One might imagine a divertissement in a setting of the Palm Court of the Hotel Plaza in New York, the year about 1914, epoch of the first tangos; 'Souvenirs, remembered with affection, not in irony or with tongue in cheek, but in amused tenderness'. This lovely movement would make a suitable quiet interlude in a concert of dance music and has been lowered by a tone to make the key more band-friendly.
