These two unpublished pieces for flute and piano were written shortly after Paul Dessau's emigration to France and were not rediscovered until 1992, when Dessau's unpublished works were looked through. The Petite Arie (Dessau's original title: Petite Arie pour Fl. & Piano) was included in Dessau's suite for alto saxophone and piano as the second movement and premiered as such in Berlin in 1989. There is no proof that the two pieces have ever premiered in the instrumentation of this edition. These works for intermediate players - which can be performed individually or together - are short performance pieces and an interesting addition to the contemporary flute and piano repertoire.

It has not been notated on computer, and not yet recorded, but I present it here just for interest. As you can see, it takes advantage of the many puns available on the French phrase for weeping willow. It is addressed to the poet Marie Keyser. The references to Chatterton, Enderby and Buddenbrooks relate to Marie's studies in German literature, in particular Chatterton's suicide. To Marie Sad soul, why don't you weep in company? Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q22733). Dessau’s String Quartet movement was written while he was also working on Brecht’s opera Puntila. After Brecht’s death in 1956 Dessau found himself looking for a new direction. On the one hand he was still working on music begun in collaboration with the poet, while on the other hand Dessau was trying to work towards a socially oriented musical aesthetic, which led him to compose songs for political purposes. Even this Quartet movement does not owe its inspiration purely to an artistic vision. In spite of its technical demands, the piece is intended to be comprehensible and could even be played by an amateur ensemble in its cleverly reduced form. Only discovered after the composer’s death, the Movement for String Quartet is published for the first time in this edition.

Tailleferre was the only female member of the famous French Les Six.1. Berceuse, originally for Violin and Piano lilts and floats in a calm and lyrical stream of dreamy phrases. 2. Pastorale, originally for solo Piano is a playful movement in mixed meter alternating between legato and articulated phrases.Together they are total about 5 minutes in length and are appropriate for advanced performers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792383). The Otto Langey Tutors were the method books of the early 20th century. Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. The rudiments of music are clearly explained, and the scale and arpeggio exercises are excellent for avoiding the boredom that can sometimes set in with other methods. The short etudes starting on page 42 were some of Mr. Harper’s favorites. With these interesting little pieces, I learned how to play exactly what is on the page. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. If I were limited to one etude book on the proverbial desert island, this would be it. This book of over 120 pages is suitable for performers from beginner right up to advanced. We are pleased to add this valuable book to our Vintage Brass collection.

We can recommend this method book for all students of intermediate level and above.

Alexander Borodin was actually trained as a chemist and physician and spent a good deal of his time promoting womens’ issues, much to the consternation of his fellow composers who wound up finishing up much of his work after his sudden death at the age of 53. The opera Prince Igor is possibly his greatest and boldest work with many beautiful melodies coming forth, especially the Chorus and Dance of the Polovetsain Maidens. The music has an mysterious Eastern sound which is very captivating. There is nothing like this written for the Trombone and Mr. Sauer’s arrangement is wonderful.This work is about 7 minutes in length for advanced performers.

This is perfect for the soloist of this arrangement.Ralph Sauer has arranged Two Scenes from L'enfant et les Sortilèges for Trombone and Piano. This arrangement of about 8 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers and includes the famous passage that is often presented at auditions.
