These Fantasias are part of a collection of Twelve Fantasias for Viola da Gamba Solo, originally published in 1735 but considered lost until rediscovered in 2015. Mr. Sauer has beautifully transcribed them for unaccompanied Tenor Trombone and are appropriate for advanced performers. His editorial dynamics have been included as suggestions. Nimrod, the ninth variation from Elgar's masterpiece Op. 36, Enigma Variations (1898-99) is one of the most recognized works in the classical repertoire. There are so many adjectives to describe this piece of genius: stately, majestic, serious, solemn, moving, noble, languid, stoic, enduring and sublime. There are few works in the repertoire that bring forth such strong emotions as this work, which is often performed for funerals and for Memorial Day / Remembrance Day services. Mr. Sauer's arrangement is dedicated to the memory of the late Milt Stevens. This arrangement of 3-4 minutes in length is appropriate for an advanced performer on the top part and is of moderate difficultly for the rest.

The music has an mysterious Eastern sound which is very captivating. There is nothing like this written for the Trombone and Mr. Sauer’s arrangement is wonderful.This work is about 7 minutes in length for advanced performers.

Fantasy Piece is an early work of Rachmaninoff, part of a grouping of five short pieces called Morceau de Fantasie.   One of his most famous works, the Prélude in C-sharp minor is from this same group of music.   Opus 3, No. 3 is also sometimes referred to as the Melody in E major.   It's slow tempo allows the mood of the work to reach a giant climax.   Rachmaninoff's lush harmonies and gorgeous melody work very well with this transcription by Ralph Sauer. For moderately advanced performers this movement is about 4 3/4 minutes in length.

He was also a very talented painter in the style of Goya. The Two Dances, 1. Oriental and 2. Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas españolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Euphnium and Piano. Euphonium performers will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire. The Two Dances (in tenor clef) are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

The Intermezzo is a 4-minute interlude that ties the second and third acts together. It is very expressive, lyrical and portends the tragedy yet to unfold in the finale of Act IV. This wonderful arrangement by Ralph Sauer is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 4 minutes in length.

Gliere's beautiful character pieces, Six Album Leaves from Op. 51 are from a larger collection of twelve originally written for Cello and Piano in 1911 while the composer was living in Berlin. The composer most likely was inspired by Schumann’s versions which were unknown in Russia. The pieces are full of eastern sounding melodies and exploit the singing nature of the Tuba or Bass Trombone. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly arranged six of these for advanced performers.

Elgar composed this heartfelt work in 1914 for string orchestra, harp, and organ, just before the outbreak of WWI. It is a bleak adagio of thoughtful intensity that he dedicated as a tribute to W.H. Reed, a dear friend, and the Concertmaster of the London Symphony. The work has been described most beautifully by Michael Kennedy who wrote, It is, though short, a major work of grave beauty, an epitome of Elgar’s ability to express nostalgic regret.Ralph Sauer has arranged this beautiful work for Bass Trombone and Piano as an homage to the great English master.
