Ralph Sauer has beautifully edited 13 Bel Canto studies for Tenor Trombone by three Italian operatic masters: Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. These studies are the in the style of vocalises, (having no words) and can be performed unaccompanied, or with their original accompaniments. The Bel Canto studies which are in bass clef, are from the same era as the famous Bordogni studies and can be used by intermediate performers. These 13 works are a wonderful addition to the Trombone repertoire and can be performed on recitals, auditions and juries.

Philharmonic Principal Trombone. Handl's Pater Noster is not too difficult and would be appropriate for almost any level group including high school level. The range is conservative with an occasional high B-flat.  Jacob Handl was an Austrian composer of Slovene descent, born in Ljubljana. Choirmaster to the Bishop of Olmutz 1579-1585, he lived thereafter in Prague as an organist.

One of the greatest works of the French impressionist era, Pre�lude à l’après-midi d’un faune by Claude Debussy evokes mystery, stillness, lyricism, finesse, sensuality, nature, dreams and desires. Taken from a poem by Ste�phane Mallarme� this work is considered by some to be a turning point of musical history as an awakening of modern music as it stretches the limits of tonality. The work was later choreographed in 1912 by Nijinsky. This marvelous arrangement by Ralph Sauer is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 10 minutes in length.

However he was persuaded to change the name about five years later by a critic's review. In 1903, Sibelius was still composing in a Romantic style, not the austere sounds heard after he composed the 4th Symphony.Romance is made up of three sections; A slow Andante, a faster middle section and a slow third section. Mr. Sauer has distilled the music down to a lovely solo for Horn and Piano.This crowd-pleaser will work well for advanced performers.

Sérénade is an early work of Rachmaninoff, from a grouping of five short solo Piano pieces titled Morceau de Fantasie written in 1892 and dedicated to his harmony teacher Anton Arensky.  One of his most famous works, the Prélude in C-sharp minor is from this same Opus 3.  Opus 3, No. 5 in B-flat minor is the final work of the set and is in a gentle Waltz style, sometimes venturing into the Dorian mode.Rachmaninoff's lush harmonies and gorgeous melody work very well for the Trombone with this fine arrangement by Ralph Sauer.For advanced performers, this movement is about 5 minutes in length.

They will add much to the Bass Trombone (Tuba) study/etude literature. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship. Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not concert material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical étude book. I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the bass trombone (or tuba) while keeping the wide tessitura of the original. The keys have been changed to put each étude in a more suitable range, while the trills from the original bassoon version are included primarily for tuba players. These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding.

This work WAB 90, a second setting, was composed and first performed in Vienna in 1886 for humming men's choir and tenor soloist. It is hauntingly beautiful and has been expertly arranged for 5-part Trombone ensemble by Ralph Sauer.

Reed, a dear friend, and the Concertmaster of the London Symphony. The work has been described most beautifully by Michael Kennedy who wrote, It is, though short, a major work of grave beauty, an epitome of Elgar’s ability to express nostalgic regret.Ralph Sauer has arranged this beautiful work for Bass Trombone and Piano as an homage to the great English master. Ralph Sauer, has done a beautiful job in arranging this music (originally played offstage on the English Horn) for Bass Trombone It is about 2 1/2 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.
