He was very well known during his lifetime, and modern scholars consider him to be one of the most important keyboard composers before Johann Sebastian Bach. The Ricercare No. 13 and Fantasia No. 1 for Four Trombones arranged by Ralph Sauer are two wonderfully composed contrapuntal works that are a joy to perform. They are possibly the best works from a collection of his numerous keyboard compositions.

The Six Duos Op. 50 for Euphoniums were originally written for two Cellos by Offenbach probably as teaching aids or for a light chamber music selection for an evening soirée. Being a Cellist himself, these works were most likely first played by Offenbach. The Six Duos contain over 50 minutes worth of music and are appropriate for intermediate to advanced performers.Both parts have F-valve notes, but are not mandatory, as Mr. Sauer has written alternate ones.

The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire.The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Sauer has scored these songs beautifully for the Trombone and Piano.

The work was influenced by a traditional dance used to worship the fire-god where the participants involved would jump or leap through fire. Candela, a Gypsy girl performs this Ritual Fire Dance causing a ghost to appear. She begins to dance with the ghost whirling faster and faster until the ghost is pulled into the fire, causing it to disappear.This brilliant arrangement by Ralph Sauer for Horn and Piano of about four and a half minutes is written for advanced performers.

Holst's 7-movement Suite, The Planets was written between 1914-16 and its first version was scored for two pianos except for the Neptune movement, which was written for organ alone. The music is the first ever composed with a fade-away ending using a womens' chorus. Later, Holst completed his orchestration of the 7-movement Suite, which has become one of the most popular works in the repertoire. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly scored this movement of about nine minutes in length for 14-part brass ensemble with Timpani and Glockenspiel.
