It was written as early as 1704 while the composer was in his teens, which could explain some of its unusual features. It first appeared in publication in 1833 by way of Felix Mendelssohn. The first appearance of this work as a transcription and recording for brass came in 1979 by Frederick Mills and the Canadian Brass, becoming an iconic work in the ensemble's repertoire. Ralph Sauer has had a great deal of success with his transcriptions of Bach's works. He was very well known during his lifetime, and modern scholars consider him to be one of the most important keyboard composers before Johann Sebastian Bach. The Ricercare No. 13 and Fantasia No. 1 for Four Euphoniums (or Three Euphoniums and Tuba) arranged by Ralph Sauer are two wonderfully composed contrapuntal works that are a joy to perform. They are possibly the best works from a collection of his numerous keyboard compositions.
